Beginner Driving Lessons in Doncaster

Never sat in the driver's seat? Our beginner driving lessons in Doncaster start from the very beginning, on quiet roads, at a pace that suits you. You don't need to pass your theory test first, and a 1.5 hour lesson starts from £60 with pick-up from your door.

Before your first driving lesson

All you need to start learning to drive is a valid provisional driving licence. You can apply for one from the age of 15 years and 9 months and start driving lessons on the road at 17. Bring your provisional licence to your first lesson, along with glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving, and wear comfortable shoes you can feel the pedals in.

What happens on your first driving lesson

Your instructor picks you up from home, work or college and drives to a quiet residential area. You start with the cockpit drill: setting your seat, steering wheel, head restraint and mirrors, and checking your seatbelt. Then you learn the controls one at a time before practising moving off and stopping safely at the side of the road.

Nobody expects you to drive through Doncaster town centre on day one. Early lessons focus on comfort rather than speed, and you only move on once the basics feel natural.

What's included in our beginner lessons

  • Cockpit drill, controls and moving off from a standstill
  • Quiet residential routes that keep traffic light while you learn
  • No theory test needed before you start
  • A choice of manual or automatic car from your first lesson
  • A choice of male or female driving instructor

Manual or automatic: which should a beginner choose?

A manual licence lets you drive any car, while an automatic licence only covers automatics. Automatic driving lessons are often quicker to learn and less stressful, because there is no clutch to control. If you are unsure, ring us and we will talk it through honestly. Read more about manual driving lessons and automatic driving lessons.

From first lesson to driving test

Once you can move off and stop confidently, your lessons build step by step: junctions, roundabouts, meeting traffic, hill starts and the reversing manoeuvres you may be asked to do on test. Later lessons cover dual carriageways, independent driving with a sat nav and the roads around the Doncaster driving test centre. Your instructor writes progress notes after every lesson so you always know what comes next.

Pass your theory test along the way and your instructor will help you judge when to book the practical test. A mock driving test before the real thing shows whether you are ready.

How many driving lessons do beginners need?

The DVSA's Ready to Pass campaign puts the average at around 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice. Practising between lessons with a family member or friend can make a real difference: they must be at least 21, have held a full licence for the type of car for three years, and you must be insured to drive the car.

Why learn with a local Doncaster driving school

Learning with a local driving school means your driving instructor knows the junctions, roundabouts and test routes you will meet. Alma teaches manual and automatic driving lessons across Doncaster and the surrounding areas, so new drivers practise on the roads they will use every day. Our experienced instructors focus on safe driving and real driving skills, from clutch control and gear changes to reading the road ahead.

Once you have passed, we are still here. If you need to fast-track your learning, ask about an intensive course, and if you ever lose confidence after a break, our refresher lessons will get you back behind the wheel.

“I’ve recently just passed my driving test with the help of the best instructors Bogdan and Robert. Driving can be intimidating sometimes, but their patience and professionalism has helped me in achieving my dream goal!”
