A first driving lesson is mostly about getting comfortable. In Warmsworth your instructor picks you up, drives to a quiet residential street such as Park Crescent or Coldstream Avenue, and swaps seats with you there. Here is what the first few lessons usually look like.
You can apply for a provisional licence on GOV.UK once you are 15 years and 9 months old, and you can drive a car from 17. Some disabled learners who receive, or are waiting on, the enhanced mobility rate of PIP can drive from 16. Apply through the GOV.UK provisional licence service and leave time for the card to arrive by post.
The theory test can wait a little. Most beginners book it after a few lessons, once the road signs and rules start to make sense in practice, and the two-year life of a theory pass gives you plenty of time.
Once parked on a quiet street, you work through the cockpit drill: doors, seat, steering wheel, head restraint, seat belt and mirrors, in that order. Your instructor then explains the pedals and the main controls, and you get the feel of the car with the engine running before it ever moves.
By the end of the hour most beginners have moved off and stopped several times. You check the mirrors and look over your shoulder for the blind spot, then pull away gently and bring the car to a smooth stop close to the kerb.
From lesson two you start checking the mirrors before every change of speed or direction. Your instructor will keep reminding you until it becomes a habit you no longer think about.
These lessons are about controlling the car on the move. Expect lots of left turns into side roads around Tenter Lane and Church Lane, then right turns, which need more planning because you have to look for oncoming traffic. You will practise approaching junctions slowly enough to look properly before you emerge.
Mill Lane gets added once you are steady. Parked cars near Warmsworth Primary School mean thinking ahead about who has priority, and judging whether you fit through a gap.
When the basics are reliable, you move onto the A630 High Road. Buses and the junction with Edlington Lane give you plenty to think about there. Sheffield Road and the Junction 36 roundabout follow later. The pace is set by how you are getting on, never by a fixed plan.
Your instructor keeps a record of what you have covered, so you can see your progress from one week to the next and know what is coming.

Bring your provisional licence and wear shoes that let you feel the pedals. Trainers or flat shoes are ideal. If you need glasses or contact lenses to see at a distance, wear them too. Nothing else is needed, because your instructor explains everything in the car.
No. Beginners start on quiet residential streets, and your instructor drives you there if you live on a busier road. High Road and Sheffield Road come in once you can move off and stop reliably on your own.
Once or twice a week works well for most people, as long as the lessons are regular. Long gaps mean spending the first part of each lesson remembering what you did last time. Block bookings can make a regular slot easier to keep.
Yes. Many beginners feel more relaxed with a particular instructor, and you can ask for a female or male instructor when you book. Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs).
