Learning to drive in the middle of Doncaster means bus lanes and busy crossings, with a ring of main roads around the Frenchgate Centre. Alma Driving School picks up across DN1 and builds you up from quiet side streets to the city's busiest junctions, at a pace that suits you.
Doncaster town centre sits in the DN1 postcode district, which covers the city centre and Hyde Park. Doncaster was made a city in 2022, but the heart of it is still compact: the railway station, the Frenchgate Centre, St George's Minster and the Market Place are all within a few minutes of each other on foot.
For a learner, that compact layout is the challenge. In a short loop you can meet busy junctions on Waterdale, shoppers crossing near Hall Gate, buses pulling out from stops on Cleveland Street and taxis waiting near the Interchange. The roads are rarely fast, but they ask for good observation and early decisions.
The centre is also ringed by bigger roads. Trafford Way (part of the A638) runs past the station and beneath the Frenchgate Centre, Church Way carries traffic past the Minster, and the A18 heads out along Carr House Road and Leger Way towards the racecourse. Learning here gives you a taste of almost every kind of road Doncaster has.
Nobody starts on Trafford Way. Your first lessons happen on quieter residential roads just outside the core, for example the tree-lined Avenue Road off Thorne Road, where you can get used to the controls and to moving off and stopping, without a queue behind you.
Once you can steer and brake smoothly and judge gaps, we bring you closer in. Christ Church Road and Thorne Road give you steady traffic and plenty of junctions. After that comes the inner loop: College Road, Waterdale, Cleveland Street and the junctions around Hall Gate, where you learn to read lanes, watch for people stepping out and keep calm with a bus behind you.
Later lessons move outwards. Carr House Road and Leger Way bring larger roundabouts, the A630 gives you dual carriageway driving, and White Rose Way (the A6182) is a good place to learn slip roads and lane discipline before you take motorway lessons once you have passed.
We collect you from home, work, school or college, wherever that is in the centre. A few places our town centre learners often ask for:
If you are coming in by train or bus, tell us when you book and we will agree a sensible meeting point close to the station and Interchange, away from the bus stands.
Doncaster's practical driving test centre is at Heather Court on Shaw Wood Business Park, Shaw Wood Way (DN2 5YL). It is roughly three miles north-east of the city centre, just off Thorne Road (A18) beside Sandall Park.
From the centre there are two natural ways out: along Church Way and through Wheatley towards the A630 Wheatley Hall Road dual carriageway, or along Thorne Road through Town Moor and Wheatley Hills. Both give you a realistic mix of town traffic and faster roads, so we drive both well before your test and spend time on the kind of junctions you will meet around the test centre.

Both. Early lessons use quieter residential streets near the centre, then we bring you into the inner loop around Waterdale and Cleveland Street once you are ready. Learning to cope with buses and busy crossings is part of getting to test standard in Doncaster.
Yes. We regularly collect learners from the Hub on Chappell Drive, and we can also collect from Doncaster UTC on College Road or Hall Cross Academy on Thorne Road. Let us know your timetable and we will fit lessons around it, including straight after classes.
The Doncaster theory test centre is at Fraser House on Netherhall Road, very close to the centre. You need a provisional licence first, and you can book through GOV.UK. Our theory test guide has revision tips.
The test centre on Shaw Wood Way is roughly three miles north-east of the city centre. In normal traffic it is a short drive out through Wheatley, and we make sure you have driven the roads in that direction many times before your test.
It depends on what you want from your licence. Manual covers both types of car, while automatic is easier in stop-start city traffic. Our guide to choosing a manual or automatic licence sets out the pros and cons.
Manual or automatic, from £60 for 1.5 hours, picked up from your door.
