Build your confidence on faster roads with motorway driving lessons on the M18 and A1(M). We teach learners who are nearly ready for their test as well as qualified drivers who want more confidence, and we run the DVSA Pass Plus course for new drivers.
Since June 2018, learner drivers in England, Scotland and Wales have been able to take driving lessons on motorways. The lesson must be with an approved driving instructor in a car fitted with dual controls, so you always have a professional beside you who can step in.
Motorway lessons are voluntary. Your instructor will only suggest one once you are comfortable at higher speeds on dual carriageways. Motorways are not part of the practical driving test, so many people pass without ever using one. A lesson or two before you pass means your first motorway drive is with an instructor rather than on your own.
The rules for motorways are set out in The Highway Code, and your instructor will talk you through the sections that matter most before you join.
The M18 runs along the east of Doncaster and the A1(M) along the west, so most pick-up points are a short drive from a motorway junction. That means a 1.5 or 2 hour lesson leaves plenty of time on the motorway itself.
We build up gradually. Most learners practise on dual carriageways first, then join the motorway at a quieter time of day before moving on to busier periods.
Pass Plus is a DVSA training course for drivers who want to drive more safely. It takes at least 6 hours, and you can take it at any time, although it is most useful in the year after you pass. The course has six modules:
There is no test at the end. Your instructor assesses you throughout, and you pass by reaching the required standard in every module. Completing Pass Plus may help you get a discount on your car insurance, so ask your insurer before you book. Pass Plus must be taught by a Pass Plus registered approved driving instructor. You can read more about the course on GOV.UK.
If it has been a while since you drove at all, start with our refresher driving lessons and add motorway practice once you feel settled.
Motorway lessons are booked as 1.5 hour or 2 hour lessons, so there is enough time to reach the motorway and practise properly. Lessons are available in manual and automatic cars. Call us on 07402 034084 or message us on WhatsApp for current motorway lesson and Pass Plus prices.
“Had some lessons with Nick from Alma, I started out with low to no confidence and thanks to him it’s now sky rocketed and I’m able to drive without shaking and almost throwing up. He’s very relaxed and sends out good vibes as he explains what needs to be done, where you went wrong and where you went right. …”
“Massive thanks to Alma Driving School and Sergiu! His insightful and well-structured lessons gave me the confidence to pass on my first attempt. He made everything easy to understand and adapted the sessions to my experience. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a great driving school!”
