Wheatley is one of the handiest places in Doncaster to learn to drive. The streets off Beckett Road are calm enough for a first lesson, Wheatley Hall Road gives you a proper dual carriageway, and the practical test centre beside Sandall Park is only a short drive up the road.
Wheatley is an inner suburb in the DN2 postcode district, immediately north-east of Doncaster city centre. The River Don lies to the north, Intake to the south and Wheatley Hills to the east. Most of the suburb sits south of the A630 Wheatley Hall Road, the dual carriageway that carries traffic out towards Armthorpe and the M18.
It is an old place. Wheatley appears in the Domesday Book, became its own urban district in 1900 and was absorbed into the borough of Doncaster in 1914. What a learner notices today is the mix it gives you: long residential roads, a busy shopping park, bus routes on Thorne Road and Beckett Road, and fast roads on the northern edge.
Beginners usually start on the side roads off Beckett Road, such as Axholme Road and Oversley Road, where you can get used to steering and stopping before meeting much traffic. Next come the estate roads around Exeter Road and Truro Avenue. They have more corners and the odd bus to plan around.
Next come Beckett Road and Thorne Road, both on bus routes into the Frenchgate Interchange. Thorne Road runs all the way from Christ Church Road out to Wheatley Hills, with side roads such as Wentworth Road and Winchester Avenue joining along the way. Barnby Dun Road adds a link between Thorne Road and Wheatley Hall Road.
Later you will drive Wheatley Hall Road itself, join the A18 at the Shaw Lane Roundabout and follow the A630 east past Armthorpe towards Junction 4 of the M18. Our motorway lessons and Pass Plus carry on from there once you have passed.

Doncaster's practical driving test centre is at Heather Court on Shaw Wood Business Park, Shaw Wood Way (DN2 5YL). It is in Wheatley Hills, just off Thorne Road next to Sandall Park, so from most Wheatley streets it is only a few minutes away.
That matters more than it sounds. You will drive the roads leading to that side of town in almost every lesson, which means Wheatley Hall Road, the Shaw Lane Roundabout and the kind of junctions you will meet around the test centre become routine long before your test. DVSA does not publish test routes, so we still cover a wide range of roads, but nothing about the area will be unfamiliar. Our guide to the Doncaster driving test explains how the day works.

Very close. The test centre on Shaw Wood Way sits beside Sandall Park in Wheatley Hills, so from most of Wheatley it is a short drive out along Thorne Road. You will get to know that side of town well during your lessons.
Wheatley is in the DN2 postcode district. Intake and Wheatley Hills share it. We pick up across DN2 and the neighbouring districts, so it does not matter which side of Thorne Road you live on.
