Holding a full licence and actually using it are not always the same thing. Maybe you passed years ago, have just moved to DN2 or had a scare that knocked your confidence. Refresher lessons in a dual controlled car get you back to driving on your own terms.
There is no test and no pressure. Your first session begins with an easy drive around Wheatley while your instructor gets a feel for your driving. After that we plan the lessons around what you want to be able to do.
The Wheatley Centre shopping park on Wheatley Hall Road now includes a much larger Marks and Spencer, which planned the move there as it left the city centre. Retail park traffic, with cars turning in from the A630 and drivers hunting for spaces, is worth getting used to again.
New homes are also being built on the former McCormick Tractors site on Wheatley Hall Road, where approval was given for 188 houses on land with room for up to 456. New housing usually means more traffic and building work nearby, so it is worth knowing the area as it changes.
For many refresher drivers in Wheatley, the main worry is the A630. Wheatley Hall Road is a dual carriageway, and joining it, changing lanes and leaving at the right point all need confident observation. We start at quieter times and build up.
The Shaw Lane Roundabout is another. Here the A18 from Thorne Road meets the A630, and drivers are choosing between the M18 and Edenthorpe or heading back towards the city. Driving it a few times with an instructor beside you takes a lot of the fear away.
A typical first refresher lesson might begin on Beckett Road, where the traffic is steady but slow, so you can get the feel of the car again. From there you could move onto Thorne Road towards Wheatley Hills, then take Barnby Dun Road up to Wheatley Hall Road. Finishing with a few laps of the Shaw Lane Roundabout and a drive back along the A630 gives you a real sense of progress in a single session.
If your aim is something specific, such as parking at the Wheatley Centre or driving into town along Church Way, we can build the lesson around that instead.
From Wheatley you are close to the motorway network. The A630 carries on past Armthorpe to Junction 4 of the M18, which is a good place to rebuild confidence with slip roads and lane discipline. If motorway driving is your goal, tell us when you book and we will plan for it. You can also read about our motorway lessons and Pass Plus.
Some drivers only need one or two lessons, while others like a short block booking to rebuild confidence steadily. Prices are on our prices page.

Not at all. Refresher lessons are for people who already hold a licence and want to feel more confident. Your instructor will start wherever you are comfortable and build up from there.
Yes. If you need to drive to Doncaster Royal Infirmary on Armthorpe Road, we can practise the route at similar times to your shifts, including finding your way in and out of the area safely.
No. Refresher lessons are in our dual controlled cars, which are fully insured. Once you feel confident, you can carry on practising in your own car on the routes you covered.
It varies. Some people feel ready after one or two sessions, others prefer several. Your instructor will tell you frankly after the first session what they think, and the number of lessons is then up to you.
