Armthorpe is home ground for Alma Driving School. Our registered office is in the village, and the Doncaster driving test centre sits on the same eastern side of the city, a short drive away along Doncaster Road and the A18. We teach manual and automatic lessons from any address in DN3.
Armthorpe is a large suburban village and civil parish in the DN3 postcode district, about three miles east of Doncaster city centre. It grew as a mining community around Markham Main Colliery, which was sunk in 1916 and closed for good in 1996, and the colliery-era estates were laid out in rings and crescents that still shape the village today.
Farmland separates the eastern edge of the village from the M18, and junction 4 is less than two miles from Armthorpe Academy on Mere Lane. Intake lies to the west beyond the Leger Way roundabout. Edenthorpe and Kirk Sandall are to the north, and Cantley is to the south-west.
Alma was set up in Doncaster in 2022 by Loredana and Alexandru, and our registered office is here in Armthorpe. Lessons in the village are lessons on our own doorstep.
The colliery-era crescents just off Doncaster Road, such as Paxton Crescent and Mansfield Crescent, give a learner curved kerbs and parked cars without much through traffic. Short closes off Parkway are useful for turning in the road.
Church Street and Mere Lane meet in the middle of the village. Both carry the 381 and 382 bus circulars, with parked cars on both sides at busy times. Three schools sit on Mere Lane, so learners meet the school run properly here.
Doncaster Road leads west out of the village and becomes Armthorpe Road as it passes Castle Park, home of Doncaster Knights rugby club, on the way to the Leger Way roundabout. From there the A18 runs north to Sandall Park and the test centre, and later lessons can head out along the A630 West Moor Link towards the M18.
The practical test centre is at Unit 10 and 11 Heather Court, Shaw Wood Business Park, Shaw Wood Way, DN2 5YL, close to Thorne Road (A18) by Sandall Park and Shaw Lane Industrial Estate. From the middle of Armthorpe it is only a few miles by road.
The most direct way is west along Doncaster Road and Armthorpe Road to the Leger Way roundabout, then north on the A18 to the Sandall Park roundabout, where the road becomes Thorne Road. Do not confuse the two Shaw Woods: the ancient woodland on the north-west edge of the village is a protected site of special scientific interest, while the test centre is on a business park off Thorne Road.
DVSA does not publish test routes, but this side of the city lets you practise on roads like the ones you will meet on test as part of normal lessons. Our Doncaster driving test guide explains the day itself.
Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs), and every car is dual controlled and fully insured. You can choose between our female driving instructors and male driving instructors, and both manual and automatic cars are available.
Current lesson costs and block booking packages are on the prices page, our Doncaster lesson prices guide explains what to compare, and the reviews page shows what learners say about us.

Only a few miles by road, depending on where in the village you start. The usual way is Doncaster Road and Armthorpe Road to the Leger Way roundabout, then the A18 north to the Sandall Park roundabout and Thorne Road. The centre is on Shaw Wood Way, DN2 5YL.
Learner drivers can take motorway lessons with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car, and junction 4 of the M18 is very close to the village. Once you are confident on the A18, ask about our motorway lessons and Pass Plus.
Armthorpe Academy teaches 11 to 16 year olds, so most pupils will not yet be old enough to drive. Older learners at college or sixth form elsewhere can be collected from home in Armthorpe or from work. Ring 07402 034084 to arrange it.
Prices are the same across Doncaster and are kept up to date on our prices page, including block booking packages for manual and automatic lessons. Ask us about the options when you get in touch.
