A mock test tells you, before the real day, whether your driving would pass. From Armthorpe we head out along Doncaster Road and the A18 to roads like those around the Shaw Wood Way test centre, and mark every fault on the DVSA sheet.
Your instructor arrives at your home and the mock begins as the real test does, with the eyesight check. You read a number plate from 20 metres away, and then answer a tell me question about the car before you set off.
The drive itself mirrors the practical test. Somewhere along the way you will be asked a show me question while moving. There is a long section of independent driving, around 20 minutes, where you follow sat nav directions or road signs without help. You will also carry out one reversing exercise. It might be parallel parking or bay parking, and the other possibility is pulling up on the right and reversing. An emergency stop may be included.
Throughout, your instructor stays quiet and marks faults exactly as an examiner would. The full session, including the debrief, takes about two hours.
Treat it as seriously as the real thing. Wear the shoes you plan to wear on the day and bring your licence, plus glasses if you need them, so nothing about the mock feels different from the test itself.
A typical mock leaves Armthorpe by Church Street or Mere Lane and joins Doncaster Road, which becomes Armthorpe Road as it heads west past Castle Park to the Leger Way roundabout. From there the A18 runs north to the Sandall Park roundabout, where it becomes Thorne Road, close to the test centre on Shaw Wood Way.
Around there you will drive through residential streets and busier junctions, the kind of mix you will meet around the test centre. Some mocks add a stretch of the A630 West Moor Link from the Shaw Lane roundabout for faster road work. DVSA does not publish test routes, so the aim is to cover a realistic range of roads, not to learn one route by heart.
Once you are parked back home, the marking sheet comes out and your instructor talks you through it, then hands over a written summary to keep. On the real test you pass with 15 or fewer driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults, so the debrief shows how close you are.
Keep the written summary somewhere handy and read it again the night before your test. The most useful part is the pattern. If several faults cluster around one skill, such as mirrors before changing lanes on the A18 or speed on approach to the Leger Way roundabout, you know exactly where to focus your next lessons.

No one can use the real test route, because DVSA does not publish routes. A mock from Armthorpe covers the kind of roads and junctions you are likely to meet on the east side of Doncaster, which is the best preparation available.
Two to three weeks before is a good time. That leaves room for a few lessons to fix anything the mock picks up, without being so early that your driving changes a lot before the day.
Yes. Mock tests are available in manual and automatic cars. It makes sense to take the mock in the same type of car you will use for your practical test.
Your instructor can sit in the back during your practical test if you ask, and they will hear the examiner's feedback at the end. Many learners find that reassuring, especially after a mock has gone well.
Mock test prices are shown with our other lessons on the prices page. A mock runs for around two hours with the debrief included, so expect it to cost the same as a longer lesson.
