Automatic driving lessons in Armthorpe

Driving through Armthorpe at school time means stopping and starting, then giving way again and again. An automatic car removes the clutch from all of that, which is why many learners in the village choose two pedals. Here is how automatic lessons work locally.

The school run without a clutch

Mere Lane is home to Armthorpe Academy, the village secondary school. Two primaries sit close by on the same road: Armthorpe Shaw Wood Academy and Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Voluntary Academy. Tranmoor Lane has two more: Southfield Primary and Tranmoor Primary. At the start and end of the school day these roads fill with parked cars and crossing children, plus drivers hunting for a space.

In a manual car that means constant clutch and gear work at walking pace. In an automatic, you simply move between brake and accelerator, so more of your attention is free for the child stepping out between parked cars or the car door opening ahead.

Learning creep on the quieter streets

An automatic car will creep forward gently in drive when you lift your foot from the brake. Your instructor will start you somewhere calm, perhaps the newer streets near Walstow Crescent off Doncaster Road, so you can feel how much the car moves on its own.

Creep is the key to low-speed control. You use it to edge out of junctions or follow a queue, and to manoeuvre into a parking bay, controlling the speed with light pressure on the brake. Using one foot for both pedals takes a lesson or two to feel natural.

  1. Foot firmly on the brake, select drive.
  2. Check mirrors and blind spot.
  3. Release the parking brake.
  4. Ease off the brake and let the car creep, adding gentle accelerator if needed.

Bus stops on Church Street and Doncaster Road traffic

The 381 and 382 circulars loop through the village along Church Street, Mere Lane, Hatfield Lane and Parkway, so bus stops are part of almost every lesson. An automatic makes waiting behind a bus, then pulling out once it is safe, much simpler.

On Doncaster Road and the A18 beyond the Leger Way roundabout, the automatic gearbox chooses the gear for you. That leaves you to concentrate on lane discipline and on planning your speed for the roundabout ahead.

The 383 links the village with Doncaster by way of Wheatley Hall Road, part of the A630, so lessons heading towards town share that road with buses as well. In an automatic, merging into a lane of moving traffic comes down to judging the gap and pressing the accelerator smoothly, which leaves both hands free for steering and signalling.

The automatic-only licence

If you pass in an automatic, your licence will only let you drive automatic cars. If you later want to drive a manual you would need to pass another test. Many learners are happy with that, especially with more automatic and electric cars on the road. Because there is no clutch to master, automatic learners often need fewer lessons.

Alma's automatic instructors include Diana, who fits lessons around busy family timetables, and Alecsandru, an approved driving instructor and former college teacher. You can ask for a female instructor or a male instructor.

Automatic driving lessons in Armthorpe: your questions

Are automatic lessons easier for Armthorpe roads?

Many learners find them easier, particularly in stop-start traffic on Church Street and around the Leger Way roundabout. Without a clutch to manage, you can concentrate on observation and planning. You still need the same road skills to pass the test.

Can I change from manual to automatic part way through?

Yes. If the clutch is holding you back, switching is straightforward. Everything you have learned about junctions and roundabouts still applies, and your instructor will spend a short time on creep and braking before carrying on.

Do automatic learners take the same test?

Yes. The practical test is the same. It starts with the eyesight check and the show me and tell me questions. Then come independent driving and a reversing exercise. The only difference is that your licence will cover automatic cars only.

Can you pick me up from West Moor Park after work?

Yes. We can collect from workplaces as well as from home, and drop you back in the village afterwards. Let us know your shift times when you ring or message us.

Will an automatic help when I move on to the M18?

Motorway driving is mostly about observation and keeping a safe gap, and those skills are the same in any car. An automatic does make joining from the slip road at junction 4 a little simpler, because you can focus on matching speed instead of choosing gears.
