Alma Driving School teaches learners right across Sprotbrough, from the side streets off Melton Road down to the lanes by the River Don. We collect you from home, work, school or college and build your driving on roads you already know, then take you further afield as your skills grow.
Sprotbrough sits about three miles west of Doncaster city centre in the DN5 postcode district, perched at the top of the Don Gorge. The parish takes in Cusworth to the north, and Newton is the small riverside hamlet just to the south. Lower Sprotbrough lies down beside the River Don, so a single lesson here can move between a hilltop village and a river valley.
Much of Sprotbrough's housing is on the residential streets that branch off Melton Road, such as Park Drive, Brompton Road, Clifton Drive and Castle Grove, or along the Sprotbrough Road side towards Doncaster near Tennyson Avenue and Somersby Avenue. We pick up anywhere in the village, including the shops in the central square and the Sainsbury's Local on Sprotbrough Road.
Parents often book a lesson for straight after dropping off at Copley Junior School or Orchard Infant School. Richmond Hill Primary School families do the same, and older pupils at Ridgewood School in neighbouring Scawsby can be collected once lessons finish for the day.
Sprotbrough gives you a neat progression without having to drive far. A typical learner moves through these stages, although your instructor will set the pace by how you are getting on:
The practical test centre is at Shaw Wood Business Park, on the Armthorpe side of the city, which is the opposite side of Doncaster from Sprotbrough. That means the drive to test is a proper cross-town run, usually along Sprotbrough Road and through the North Bridge area, or round on the A1(M) and the M18 to Junction 4.
We use that drive as part of your training. Learners from the west of Doncaster often feel at home in the village but less sure on the eastern side of the city, so in the weeks before your test we spend time on roads similar to the ones you will meet around the test centre. Your theory test is closer to the middle of town, at Fraser House on Netherhall Road.
Every lesson type we offer is available in Sprotbrough. Here is why each one works well for people living here:
Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs). They teach in dual controlled cars that are fully insured. Some learners feel more relaxed with a woman beside them and others prefer a man, and you are welcome to ask for either when you book.
You can read about our female driving instructors and our male driving instructors before you decide. Loredana, one of our co-founders, is especially good with people who have lost their confidence, while Bogdan teaches in a manual car and is known for being calm and patient.
Lesson prices and block booking packages are listed on our prices page, and our guide to driving lesson prices in Doncaster explains what affects the cost. Our manual or automatic licence guide helps if you are still choosing a gearbox.

Yes. Cusworth is part of the same parish and Newton sits just south of the village by the river, so both are easy for us to reach. We can also collect you from Scawsby or High Melton, or from your workplace in Doncaster if that suits your timetable better.
The Doncaster practical test centre at Shaw Wood Business Park is on the Armthorpe side of the city. In a straight line it is about four and a half miles from Sprotbrough, and further by road. We drive there together during your lessons so the area feels familiar before test day.
Yes. Since June 2018 learners can drive on motorways with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car, and the A1(M) runs through the parish. We add motorway lessons once you are confident on faster A-roads, and they also count towards Pass Plus.
