Motability Scheme lessons in Sprotbrough

We teach disabled people and Motability Scheme customers from homes across Sprotbrough and the wider parish, including Cusworth. Every lesson is in an automatic car with dual controls, and we plan each one around your needs, starting on level roads close to home.

What we offer disabled learners

All of our Motability lessons take place in automatic cars fitted with dual controls. Having no clutch pedal reduces the physical effort of driving, and many learners find it easier to concentrate. Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs).

Lessons can be booked at times that fit around medical appointments or college timetables, and we can keep early sessions shorter if fatigue is a factor for you. Tell us what works best and we will plan the lessons around it.

When you first ring us on 07402 034084, mention any adaptations you already use or think you may need. That lets us talk honestly about what our cars can offer and whether a specialist assessment would be a sensible first step.

Starting a year early with PIP

Ordinarily you must be 17 to drive a car on the road. The exception covers people who get the enhanced rate of the mobility part of Personal Independence Payment, and those who have put in a claim for it. They can begin driving at 16.

Provisional licence applications open three months before your 16th birthday, so it pays to apply on GOV.UK in good time. For a young person in Sprotbrough relying on the 219 bus or lifts from family to reach college, that extra year can make a real difference.

Help with the cost of lessons

The Motability Foundation runs a driving lessons grant that can pay for as many as 40 hours of tuition. It is aimed at disabled people who are already on the Motability Scheme and have passed their theory test, and who meet further conditions. One of those conditions is receiving a means-tested benefit.

The Foundation organises grant-funded lessons through its own arrangements, so check with them before anything else. You can ring them on 0800 500 3186 or read the Motability Foundation guidance on driving lesson grants. If the grant is not open to you, or you would rather not wait, you can book with Alma as a private pupil.

Getting assessed before you start

The charity Driving Mobility holds car driving and adaptation assessments at an outreach centre in Doncaster, with appointments booked via its Leeds centre. An assessor looks at your seating position and how you manage the steering and pedals or hand controls, and can recommend equipment that would help.

Booking through the Driving Mobility website before your first lesson can save time later, particularly if you expect to need adaptations or have a condition that affects your movement or concentration.

Pick-up and practice routes around Sprotbrough

We collect you from your front door, or from a meeting point with level ground and room to open the doors fully, such as the central square or near the Sainsbury's Local on Sprotbrough Road. First lessons stay on the quiet side streets off Melton Road, which gives you time to get used to the car.

Later we add Melton Road and Spring Lane, then Sprotbrough Road towards Doncaster. Boat Lane, with its drop into the Don Gorge, comes when you are ready for slopes. One goal worth aiming for is driving yourself to Sprotbrough Flash, where the riverside towpath is level and both bird hides are wheelchair accessible, with parking beside the old toll house on Nursery Lane.

Motability Scheme driving lessons in Sprotbrough: your questions

Is Alma part of the Motability Foundation grant scheme?

Grant-funded lessons are organised by the Motability Foundation, so speak to them first on 0800 500 3186 to see if you qualify. If you do not, or you would like to begin sooner, you can learn with us privately in an automatic car with dual controls.

Do I need an assessment before my first lesson?

Not always, but it can help. A Driving Mobility assessment at the Doncaster outreach centre, booked via Leeds, shows which controls or adaptations would suit you. Tell us what you already know about your needs when you call and we can talk it through.

Can I have lessons before I am 17?

If you get the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component, or you have claimed it, you can drive a car from 16. Apply for your provisional licence three months before your 16th birthday so it is ready in time.
