Driving lessons in Intake

Intake is the DN2 estate between Armthorpe Road and Leger Way on the east side of Doncaster. It sits roughly a mile and a half from the city centre and shares a council ward with the Shaw Wood Way driving test centre. Alma Driving School collects learners from home or work anywhere in Intake for manual and automatic lessons.

Where Intake sits, and why that helps a learner

Intake is a suburb in the DN2 postcode district on the eastern side of Doncaster. The main shopping street is Sandringham Road. It lies roughly two and a half kilometres from Doncaster railway station as the crow flies. Most of the estate was built by the council in the 1950s and 1960s, so the streets follow a planned pattern of avenues and crescents rather than the tight terraces you find nearer the town centre.

Armthorpe Road runs along the northern side, the A18 Leger Way sweeps round to the east, and Town Moor Avenue leads off towards Town Fields and Thorne Road to the west. Wheatley and Wheatley Hills are just to the north, with Armthorpe a short drive east past the Leger Way roundabout.

That compact layout matters. Within five minutes of most front doors in Intake a learner can be on a quiet crescent, a bus route, a busy hospital road or a large A-road roundabout. You do not have to spend half the lesson driving somewhere useful, and the Doncaster practical test centre sits inside the same Wheatley Hills and Intake ward.

How lessons progress from Intake's crescents to test standard

Every learner moves at their own pace, but most lessons from Intake follow a similar order of roads. Your instructor will only move you on once the last stage feels routine.

  1. Residential crescents. Streets such as Atholl Crescent or Westminster Crescent are where most people practise moving off, stopping at the kerb and their first left turns.
  2. Bus routes. Shaftesbury Avenue and Sandringham Road carry the First South Yorkshire 365 and 366 services, so you learn to wait behind a bus at a stop and pass parked cars while judging oncoming traffic.
  3. Armthorpe Road. Traffic for Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Outwood Academy Danum makes this a lesson in planning ahead, holding back for buses and reading what other drivers are about to do.
  4. Leger Way and its roundabouts. The A18 brings higher speeds, lane choice on approach and the change from dual to single carriageway near Intake.
  5. Test standard drives. Thorne Road near Sandall Park and the roads around the test centre, with independent driving by sat nav and signs.

Pick-up points around Intake

Lessons start and finish wherever suits your week. Common pick-ups for Intake learners include:

  • Your home anywhere on the estate. That includes streets from Lakeen Road and Dublin Road over to Huntingdon Road and Lonsdale Avenue.
  • Outwood Academy Danum on Armthorpe Road, for older pupils who have turned 17.
  • Doncaster Royal Infirmary, for staff who want a lesson before or after a shift.
  • Sandringham Road, near the shops, if you are already out running errands.
  • Your workplace or college in the city centre, with drop-off back in Intake afterwards.

The drive from Intake to the Shaw Wood Way test centre

The Doncaster practical test centre is at Heather Court, Shaw Wood Business Park, Shaw Wood Way, DN2 5YL. It sits just off Thorne Road (A18) beside Sandall Park and Shaw Lane Industrial Estate, a short drive from the middle of Intake.

The usual way there is east along Armthorpe Road to the Leger Way roundabout, then north on the A18 to the Sandall Park roundabout, where the road becomes Thorne Road. The other option is west along Armthorpe Road to Thorne Road at Wheatley and out through Wheatley Hills. DVSA does not publish test routes, but practising on both gives you the kind of roundabouts and junctions you will meet on test. Read our guide to the Doncaster driving test before the day.

Lesson types for Intake learners

Choosing a male or female instructor

Some learners feel more settled with a woman beside them, others have no preference. Tell us when you call and we will match you with someone from our female driving instructors or our male driving instructors. Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs), and every car is dual controlled and fully insured.

Questions from Intake learners

How far is Intake from the Doncaster driving test centre?

The test centre on Shaw Wood Way is a short drive from the middle of Intake, reached by Armthorpe Road and the A18 or by Thorne Road through Wheatley Hills. It sits in the same Wheatley Hills and Intake council ward, so we can reach test-centre roads within a few minutes of most pick-ups.

Can you pick me up from Doncaster Royal Infirmary?

Yes. Hospital staff can book lessons around their shifts, and we can collect from the hospital on Armthorpe Road or Thorne Road and drop you home in Intake afterwards. Let us know your shift pattern when you call 07402 034084 or message us on WhatsApp.

Is Intake a good place to learn to drive?

It is a practical one. The estate's planned crescents suit the basics and bus routes such as Shaftesbury Avenue teach you to meet traffic. Armthorpe Road and the Leger Way roundabout then give you busier driving close by. That means less time spent travelling and more time on the skills you need for the test.

Can I start lessons while I am still at school?

You can drive from 17 once you hold a provisional licence, which you can apply for from 15 years and 9 months on GOV.UK. We can collect learners from school or college, including Outwood Academy Danum on Armthorpe Road, and you can study for the theory test alongside your lessons.

How much are driving lessons in Intake?

Our current lesson costs and package options are on the prices page. Intake learners pay the same as anyone else in Doncaster, and you can ask us about block booking when you call. Our guide to lesson prices in Doncaster explains what to look for.
