Refresher driving lessons in Intake

Holding a full licence does not always mean feeling ready to drive. Refresher lessons in Intake help people who have not driven for years and drivers who are new to Doncaster, using the roads right outside their own front door.

Who books refresher lessons in Intake

  • Drivers who passed years ago and have hardly driven since.
  • People who have moved to Doncaster, for example to work at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, and want to learn the local roads before driving alone.
  • Anyone left shaken by an accident or a near miss.
  • Drivers changing car, such as moving from a manual to an automatic or from a small hatchback to a bigger family car.

You do not need L plates, and there is no test at the end. The aim is to get you driving confidently on your own again, whether that means the school run to Plover Primary on Coniston Road or a commute out along Thorne Road.

Starting from where you are

The first lesson is relaxed. Your instructor will ask what worries you and then watch you drive on quieter streets such as Leicester Avenue before deciding where to go next. Some drivers only need a reminder about mirrors and road positioning. Others want to rebuild from moving off. Expect questions from your instructor too. Talking through what you can see ahead, known as commentary driving, is a quick way to sharpen observation and anticipation again.

We will also cover what has changed. The Highway Code was updated in 2022 with a hierarchy of road users, and drivers turning into a side road should now give way to pedestrians waiting to cross it. You can read the current rules in the Highway Code on GOV.UK.

The busy junctions around Intake

Most refresher pupils in Intake want to get comfortable with a handful of specific junctions. These are the ones we spend time on:

  • The Leger Way roundabout, where Armthorpe Road meets the A18, with traffic heading to and from Armthorpe.
  • The Racecourse Roundabout at Belle Vue, a large junction where the A18 meets Bawtry Road beside Doncaster Racecourse.
  • Armthorpe Road at Wheatley, where it meets Thorne Road close to the infirmary, with bus stops on both roads.
  • The Sandall Park roundabout, where the A18 becomes Thorne Road near the test centre and the Wheatley Centre shops.

Race days in September during the St Leger Festival bring extra traffic around the racecourse, so it can be worth practising those approaches before the busy weeks arrive.

Getting back on the motorway

From Intake the M18 is close. Thorne Road leads out past Sandall Park to the Shaw Lane roundabout, where the A18 meets the A630, and the A630 West Moor Link then runs on to junction 4 of the M18. From there the motorway connects with the M180 at junction 5 and the A1(M) at junction 2.

If joining at speed or overtaking lorries feels daunting, a refresher can include time on the M18 with an instructor beside you in a dual controlled car. Read more on our motorway lessons and Pass Plus page.

Booking a refresher

The main refresher driving lessons page has more detail, and the Intake driving lessons page covers pick-up points and instructors. If you would rather start from the Wheatley side of Thorne Road, see refresher driving lessons in Wheatley.

If anxiety is the main reason you stopped driving, our nervous driver lessons in Intake go even more gently.

Refresher driving lessons in Intake: your questions

How many refresher lessons will I need?

Some returning drivers feel ready after one or two sessions on Armthorpe Road and the A18. Others prefer a short block spread over a few weeks. Your instructor will give you an honest view after the first lesson, and you are never tied into more than you want.

Can you help me switch from manual to automatic?

Yes. If you have bought an automatic after years in a manual, a refresher on the roads around Intake is a quick way to get used to creep, braking with one foot and the parking brake. Most drivers settle in fast once the habit of reaching for a clutch fades.

I have just moved to Doncaster. Is a refresher worth it?

If you are unsure about the local roads, yes. A lesson or two covering the Leger Way and Racecourse roundabouts will help, and so will a run along Thorne Road and out to the M18. Your daily drives will feel far less daunting after that.

Will you pick me up from work?

We collect from home or work. If you work in the city centre or at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, we can start the lesson there and finish at your home in Intake. Call 07402 034084 or message us on WhatsApp to arrange it.
