Your first ever driving lesson can feel like a big step. In Intake it starts outside your front door and stays on residential streets until you are comfortable. Here is what happens on that first drive, and what to sort out before and after it.
The one thing you must have is a provisional driving licence. Applications open at 15 years and 9 months on GOV.UK, and you can be on the road at 17. Anyone receiving the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component (or waiting on an application for it) may start at 16.
Bring the licence along, and wear shoes with a thin flat sole so you can feel the pedals. The theory test can wait until you have a few lessons behind you, though starting revision early pays off because the practical test cannot be booked until the theory is passed. Our tips for passing the theory test first time will help.
Your instructor collects you from home or work and drives to a quiet residential street nearby. In Intake that tends to mean the crescents and avenues laid out when the estate was built, such as Atholl Crescent or the streets around Dorset Crescent, away from the buses on Shaftesbury Avenue.
The point is to give you space. There is time to stop and talk things through before trying again, without traffic queuing behind you.
With the engine still off, your instructor talks you through the cockpit drill, the checks a driver makes each time they sit down in a car:
After that you will learn what each control does. That covers the indicators and wipers as well as the lights.
Most first lessons end with you driving the car yourself. You will learn to check your mirrors and blind spot. Then you signal if needed and move away from the kerb. After that you will practise pulling up on the left in a safe, legal place, which is harder than it sounds on streets with parked cars and driveways.
Your instructor has dual controls, so they can step in if needed. By the end, many beginners have driven a short loop of the estate and made their first left turns at quiet junctions. Your instructor will finish with a quick chat about what went well and what the next lesson will cover.
Once moving off and stopping feel steady, you will start on junctions, meeting traffic on Shaftesbury Avenue and passing parked cars on Sandringham Road. After that come Armthorpe Road, the Leger Way roundabout and eventually the A18. Your instructor will explain each new step before you try it.
You can choose manual or automatic for your first lessons. See manual driving lessons in Intake and automatic driving lessons in Intake, or read the main beginner driving lessons page. If you are nearer the Bawtry Road side of town, your closest page may be beginner driving lessons in Bessacarr, and the Intake driving lessons page has everything else.

It helps to have a look, but you do not need to know it all. Your instructor will explain the rules as they come up on the road. You can read the Highway Code on GOV.UK for free, and it also helps with your theory test revision.
Lesson lengths and options are listed on our prices page. Longer lessons work well for beginners because you have more time behind the wheel once the cockpit drill and controls are covered. Ask us when you call and we will suggest what suits you.
Usually not. First lessons stay on quiet residential streets in Intake so you can learn the controls without pressure. Your instructor drives you there from your pick-up point. You will move onto busier roads such as Shaftesbury Avenue and Armthorpe Road once you are ready.
Theory tests for Doncaster are taken at Fraser House, Netherhall Road, close to the town centre. From Intake the 365 and 366 buses run to Frenchgate Interchange, which is a short walk away. You book the test yourself on GOV.UK.
