Driving lessons in Warmsworth

Warmsworth puts quiet village streets and a motorway junction within a short walk of each other. Alma Driving School collects you from home in DN4 and starts you on roads such as Tenter Lane and Church Lane, building up over time to the A630 High Road and the A1(M) at Junction 36.

Warmsworth at a glance

Warmsworth is a village and civil parish in the City of Doncaster, a few miles south-west of the city centre in the DN4 postcode district. Balby lies to the east, with Sprotbrough across the River Don to the north, Conisbrough to the west and Edlington to the south.

The A630 runs through the village as High Road, linking Warmsworth Road in Balby with the A1(M) at Junction 36. The motorway, built as the Doncaster by-pass and opened in 1961, runs along the edge of the village. Off that main road are the older streets around Quaker Lane and Church Lane, and residential roads such as Coldstream Avenue off Tenter Lane.

The roads you will learn on, step by step

Village streets

Tenter Lane and Church Lane carry the 314 bus but are otherwise residential, which makes them a gentle step up from the quietest side roads. Mill Lane, home to Warmsworth Primary School, teaches you to plan for parked cars and children around the start and end of the school day.

High Road and Sheffield Road

The A630 through the village has bus stops near Quaker Lane and Tenter Road, plus a junction with Edlington Lane. Sheffield Road, with stops at Cecil Avenue and Lunbreck Road, is served by the X3 and the 221. Both roads are good for learning to follow buses safely and to judge gaps when you turn right.

Junction 36

The motorway junction is the big step. Its roundabout teaches lane choice and reading direction signs early. When you are ready, you can join the A1(M) itself, because learners have been able to drive on motorways with an ADI in a car with dual controls since June 2018.

Across the city

Final lessons head east through Balby and over to the Armthorpe side of Doncaster, where the test centre is.

Landmarks and pick-up points

We collect learners from home, school, college or a workplace. Places in and around the village that pupils find handy include:

  • Warmsworth Primary School on Mill Lane, if a lesson straight after the school drop-off suits you
  • St Peter's Church, often called the White Church, consecrated in 1942
  • The Holiday Inn on High Road, which takes in the Grade II* listed Warmsworth Hall of 1702, useful if you work there
  • Quaker Lane, home of the Grade II listed Warmsworth House
  • The Grade II listed bell tower at the junction with Glebe Street

From Warmsworth to the test centre

Practical tests in Doncaster are taken at Shaw Wood Business Park (Shaw Wood Way, DN2 5YL), out on the Armthorpe side about three miles from the city centre. From Warmsworth the drive crosses the whole of Doncaster, so knowing the way well before test day takes some pressure off.

The first option heads east along High Road and Warmsworth Road, through Balby on Balby Road and on across the city. The second makes a good motorway lesson in its own right: south on the A1(M) from Junction 36 to Junction 35, the Wadworth Interchange, then east along the M18 to Junction 4, which is about three miles from the test centre.

The theory test is taken earlier, at Fraser House on Netherhall Road (DN1 2PW).

Lessons available in Warmsworth

Your instructor

Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs), and they teach in fully insured, dual controlled cars. Ask for a female instructor or a male instructor if you have a preference. Alma itself is a family-run school, started in Doncaster in 2022 by Loredana and Alexandru.

Single lessons and packages are listed on the prices page, with background in our Doncaster driving lesson prices guide. Pupil feedback is on the reviews page. The manual or automatic licence guide helps you pick a gearbox before you start, and the guides to the theory test and the Doncaster driving test explain each stage.

Questions from Warmsworth learners

Is Warmsworth a good place to learn to drive?

It is a useful one. Within a few minutes of home you can go from quiet residential streets to the motorway roundabout at Junction 36. High Road sits in between, busy with buses at peak times. That mix lets your instructor add one new challenge at a time without long drives to find the right roads.

Will I drive on the A1(M) during lessons?

Only when you and your instructor agree you are ready. Learners can use motorways with an approved instructor in a dual controlled car, and Junction 36 is right on the edge of Warmsworth, so a short motorway section fits easily into a later lesson.

Can you pick me up after the school run at Warmsworth Primary?

Yes. If you drop children at Warmsworth Primary School on Mill Lane, we can start your lesson nearby once the drop-off traffic has cleared, as long as there is a safe place to meet. Just tell us when you book.

How long is the drive from Warmsworth to the test centre?

It is a cross-city drive, because the test centre is on Shaw Wood Business Park on the Armthorpe side and Warmsworth is on the south-west edge of Doncaster. You can go through Balby and the city centre or use the A1(M) and M18, and we practise both.
