Feeling anxious about driving is far more common than people think. In Warmsworth we start nervous learners on the quietest streets in the village and only move on when you say so. Here are the worries we hear most often and how we deal with each one.
We meet at your home and talk before anything else. You sit in the driver's seat with the engine off while you sort out the seat and mirrors and ask any questions you have. When you are ready, the first drive is a slow lap of a quiet street such as Park Crescent, with as many stops as you like.
Junction 36 of the A1(M) is right on the edge of the village, and for some learners just knowing it is there is enough to cause nerves. You do not need to go near it in your early lessons. We plan routes that stay in the residential streets around Tenter Lane and Church Lane until you feel settled.
When you are ready, we first look at the roundabout from a side road, then drive round it at a quiet time, talking through each lane. Many learners find it is much less frightening once they have done it a couple of times.
Sheffield Road and High Road both carry regular buses, and having a bus or a queue of cars behind you can feel like pressure. Your instructor will remind you that driving at a safe speed for the road is exactly right, and that other drivers can wait.
We practise pulling over safely to let traffic past, so you know you always have that option. Knowing you can step out of the flow often makes it easier to stay in it.
Stalling at the Edlington Lane junction is a classic fear. If it happens, you put the handbrake on and restart the engine, then carry on. Your instructor stays calm and the dual controls are there if needed. If you would rather not deal with a clutch, automatic driving lessons in Warmsworth take that worry away completely.
There is no deadline for any step. If a lesson goes badly, the next one can drop back a stage.
Reading the Highway Code a little at a time also helps, because knowing who has priority at each junction takes away some of the guesswork.
Loredana, one of our co-founders, has a particular way with nervous learners and drivers who have lost confidence. Sergiu explains why a mistake happened without ever raising his voice. You can ask for a female driving instructor or a male driving instructor, whichever helps you relax.

Just say so. Your instructor will find a safe place to pull over, where you can take a break and talk things through. If you would rather not drive any further, your instructor can drive you home. You are always in control of how far a lesson goes.
Yes, if you tell us when you book, and we would always encourage you to. It helps your instructor plan quieter routes around Warmsworth and explain each step before you try it, rather than surprising you.
Not always. Some nervous learners progress just as quickly once they settle, while others need extra time at certain stages. Regular lessons with the same instructor tend to help most, because trust builds from week to week.
