Motability Scheme lessons in Warmsworth

Alma teaches disabled learners and people on the Motability Scheme in Warmsworth, using automatic cars with dual controls. Below is the order most people find easiest to follow, from checking whether you can start at 16 through to your first lesson from home.

1. Check when you can start

The usual age for driving a car is 17. If you are on the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment, or you have put in a claim for it, you can start at 16. Either way, a provisional licence comes first, through GOV.UK.

Some medical conditions have to be reported to DVLA. The licence application asks about your health, so answer those questions fully and check GOV.UK if you are unsure what needs declaring.

2. Think about an assessment

If you are not sure which controls or adaptations you need, a driving assessment is a good idea before lessons begin. Driving Mobility, a charity, carries out car driving and adaptation assessments and has a Doncaster outreach centre. Appointments there are arranged through its Leeds centre. Details are on the Driving Mobility website.

Share the outcome with us when you book, so your instructor understands what you need from the start.

3. Look into grant funding

The Motability Foundation has a driving lessons grant that can fund up to 40 hours of lessons. It is for disabled people on the Motability Scheme who meet some extra conditions, including a means-tested benefit, and who already have a theory test pass.

The Foundation books grant-funded lessons on your behalf, so contact them directly before anything else, by phone on 0800 500 3186 or through the Motability Foundation grants page. If you are not eligible, or you want to get started without waiting, you can take lessons with Alma as a private pupil.

Because the grant needs a theory pass in place, it is worth booking your theory test early. Our theory test guide can help with revision.

4. Book lessons from home

We pick you up from your door in Warmsworth, so there is no need to get to a meeting point. Let us know if parking near your home is tight, and we will agree a nearby spot with room to open the doors fully. Mention any adaptation needs on the phone, along with anything else that would make lessons easier, such as a particular time of day.

All Motability lessons are in automatic cars, so there is no clutch to manage. You can ask for a female instructor or a male instructor.

5. Learning on Warmsworth roads

Early lessons use quiet residential streets such as Coldstream Avenue and Park Crescent. As you progress, you move on to Tenter Lane and Church Lane. Later come High Road and Sheffield Road, and eventually the roundabout at Junction 36. The pace is entirely yours, and sessions can be planned around energy levels or appointments.

Later lessons include roads like those around the test centre on Shaw Wood Business Park, so the practical test does not feel unfamiliar.

Our main Motability driving lessons page explains more. If you live on the Balby side, see Motability driving lessons in Balby. For more on the area, go to driving lessons in Warmsworth.

Practical points for Warmsworth learners

  • Being collected from home matters if walking to a pick-up point is difficult, so we come to you.
  • Tell us if you use a wheelchair, so we can plan where to stop and how much space you need.
  • If fatigue is an issue, pick lesson times that suit how you usually feel.
  • A Driving Mobility assessment report, if you have one, helps your instructor plan from the first lesson.

Motability Scheme driving lessons in Warmsworth: your questions

Does Alma run the Motability Foundation grant lessons?

The Motability Foundation arranges grant-funded lessons itself. Check your eligibility with the Foundation first. If you are not eligible, or you would prefer to start straight away, you are welcome to learn with Alma in Warmsworth as a private pupil.

Are your cars automatic?

Yes. We teach Motability Scheme customers and disabled learners in automatic, dual controlled cars. If you think you may need other adaptations, tell us when you call and we will talk through what is possible before you book.

Do I need my theory test before lessons?

Not for private lessons with us, though you will need to pass it before booking your practical test. The Motability Foundation grant is different, because it is only for people who have already passed their theory test.

Can I learn at 16 in Warmsworth?

Yes, if you receive the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component or have applied for it. You still need a provisional licence, and you must pass the theory test before booking the practical. Lessons can start on quiet residential roads near your home.
