Cantley is a big, mostly post-war village on the south-east side of Doncaster, and its estates are full of useful roads for a learner. Alma Driving School picks up across Cantley, from the streets around Cantley Park to Warning Tongue Lane, and teaches in dual controlled manual and automatic cars.
Cantley sits across Bawtry Road from Bessacarr, with addresses in both the DN4 and DN3 postcode districts. The older settlement of Old Cantley, home to the Georgian Cantley Hall, lies about half a mile away in the Armthorpe direction. Most of modern Cantley went up after the Second World War, so you will find streets of 1950s semis and short terraces alongside later estates.
The street names make Cantley easier to learn than most places. Whole neighbourhoods follow a theme: trees, as in Lilac Grove and Pine Road; football grounds, as in Anfield Road and Ewood Drive; and racecourses, as in Ascot Avenue and Epsom Road. Once your instructor says you are heading for the racecourse streets, you will soon know roughly where you are going.
The quiet closes and gardens off Ascot Avenue, together with the tree-named roads such as Acacia Road and Birch Road, are where most Cantley learners take their first drives. Expect parked cars and the occasional delivery van, which is exactly the traffic you need to learn from.
Everingham Road and Goodison Boulevard, joined by Green Boulevard, carry First South Yorkshire buses and lead to the main shopping parades, so they teach you to plan around stopping buses and pedestrians. Goodison Boulevard is also where you will find the Co-op, and Everingham Road has its own row of shops.
Cantley Lane is the B1396 and runs past The McAuley Catholic High School. At Cantley Bridge it meets the A638 Bawtry Road, which becomes a dual carriageway heading north towards the Dome and the Racecourse Roundabout. This is where higher speeds and lane discipline come together with big roundabouts.
Practical tests in Doncaster start from Shaw Wood Business Park, across the road from Sandall Park. From Cantley, the obvious drive is out to Bawtry Road, north past the Dome to the Racecourse Roundabout, and then along the A18 Leger Way past the racecourse and through Intake to the Sandall Park roundabout and Thorne Road.
Along the way you meet a dual carriageway, one of Doncaster's busiest roundabouts and the junction of Leger Way with Armthorpe Road, beside the old concrete water tower. Nobody outside DVSA knows which roads your examiner will choose, and test routes are not published, so we prepare you for the sort of junctions and traffic found near the centre rather than a single memorised loop. Our guide to the Doncaster driving test explains how the day runs.
Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs), and every lesson car is dual controlled and fully insured. Cantley learners can ask for a female instructor or a male instructor, and we arrange the match before your first lesson.
Alma was started in 2022 by Loredana and Alexandru and is based in nearby Armthorpe. Rates and block booking packages are on our prices page, with some background in our article on driving lesson prices in Doncaster. Our reviews page shows what past pupils thought, and two short guides cover picking a manual or automatic licence and getting through the theory test.

Yes. Parts of Cantley, including the area around The McAuley Catholic High School on Cantley Lane, fall in DN3, while most of the estates are in DN4. We pick up across both, as well as from Old Cantley and nearby Branton.
We can pick up from school or college where it is safe and allowed. McAuley is on Cantley Lane, which gets very busy with school buses at the start and end of the day, so your instructor may suggest meeting a short walk away, or starting from home instead.
The quiet gardens and closes off Ascot Avenue, such as Sandown Gardens, are a favourite, along with the tree-named roads like Acacia Road. Your instructor will pick whichever quiet street is closest to your home so you do not waste time getting there.
It depends on traffic, but it is a short run of a few miles: out to Bawtry Road, round the Racecourse Roundabout and along Leger Way to Sandall Park. We use it often in later lessons because it covers so many types of road.
You need it before your first lesson. You can apply on GOV.UK from 15 years and 9 months and drive from 17, or from 16 if you get the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component. You can book your first lesson while you wait for it to arrive.
