Your first ever driving lesson should feel manageable, and Cantley's quiet closes help with that. We pick you up from home, drive somewhere peaceful nearby and spend the first part of the lesson getting you comfortable before the car moves at all.
You need a provisional driving licence. Applications open at 15 years and 9 months, and you can drive on the road from 17. If you get the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component, you can start at 16. You can apply for a provisional licence on GOV.UK.
The theory test is not required for your first lesson. It is needed before you can book the practical test, and a pass is valid for two years, so most beginners revise alongside their early lessons. Our theory test guide has tips, and you can book the theory test once you feel ready.
The racecourse-themed gardens off Ascot Avenue, such as Sandown Gardens and Goodwood Gardens, are short, quiet and well suited to a first lesson. The tree-named roads around Acacia Road and Birch Road are another option. If you live near Warning Tongue Lane, the closes off it, such as Riding Close, work well too.
Starting close to home has another benefit. These are streets you already walk or cycle, so you know where the parked cars cluster and which corners are tight, which leaves more of your attention for the controls.
Your instructor drives you there, swaps seats with you and parks up in a spot with good visibility and no traffic behind. Nothing happens until you are settled.
The cockpit drill is a set of checks you do every time you get in. It becomes second nature after a few lessons.
You will also learn what each pedal does and where the indicator stalk sits, plus how the dual controls let your instructor help if needed.
Your first time moving the car will be short and slow. You will check your mirrors and blind spot, signal if it would help anyone, and then gently move away from the kerb. After a short distance you will pull over again, with the same mirror checks and a signal before you stop.
Repeating this builds the habit of observation that you will use for the rest of your driving life. By the end of your first lesson or two, you will probably be steering round the bends of Ascot Avenue and turning into side roads. Everingham Road and Green Boulevard come next, giving you more traffic once you are ready.
Most beginners choose between learning in a manual car, which gives a licence for both types, and an automatic, which is often quicker to learn. Our automatic driving lessons in Cantley page explains how creep and brake control are taught locally.

Completely normal. Most people feel a bit anxious before their first drive. Your instructor will start slowly on a quiet Cantley street, explain everything before you do it and keep their own brake ready, so you are never in a situation you cannot handle.
One or two hours works well for most people. A two-hour lesson gives you time to relax into it, but a shorter first lesson can be a good way to start if you are unsure. Tell us your preference when you book.
Wear comfortable clothes and flat shoes with thin soles, such as trainers, so you can feel the pedals. Heavy boots and flip-flops make pedal control harder. Bring your provisional licence and glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving.
Only when you are ready. Most beginners spend their first few lessons on quiet estate roads in Cantley before moving to bus routes such as Everingham Road. Bawtry Road and the Racecourse Roundabout come later, when your control is steady.
