Alma Driving School gives driving lessons across Balby and collects you from anywhere in DN4. Your instructor starts on the quieter streets off Springwell Lane or around Woodfield Way, then works out to Balby Road and Tickhill Road, and later White Rose Way, until you are driving to test standard on roads across the city.
Balby is the suburb on the south-west side of Doncaster, in the DN4 postcode district, with railway lines marking its edge with Hexthorpe and the city centre. The A630 runs right through it, from Balby Road out along Warmsworth Road, and meets the A1(M) at Junction 36 between Balby and Warmsworth. The A60 starts here too, heading south as Tickhill Road towards Tickhill and Worksop.
For a learner that means a useful spread of roads within a few minutes of home. Older terraced streets, like those around Lister Avenue where Open All Hours was filmed, teach you to judge gaps between parked cars. The newer Woodfield Plantation estate off Woodfield Way has quieter roads for the basics. The dual carriageway on White Rose Way, running past Lakeside Village, is close enough to reach in a single lesson once you are ready for it.
Most pupils are collected from home, but your instructor can also meet you at school or college, or from work, if that suits your week better. Places Balby learners often use include:
Practical tests are taken at the Doncaster centre on Shaw Wood Business Park, Shaw Wood Way (DN2 5YL), roughly three miles out of the city centre on the Armthorpe side. From Balby you are crossing to the opposite side of Doncaster, so the drive takes in a fair amount of city traffic before you even reach the business park.
There are two sensible ways over. One follows Balby Road into the centre and out the far side. The other uses White Rose Way to Junction 3 of the M18 and then the motorway to Junction 4, which is about three miles from the test centre. Learners have been allowed on motorways with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car since June 2018, so the second option doubles as motorway experience.
In the final weeks your instructor spends more time on roads like the ones near the test centre, so the area feels familiar on the day. Your theory test comes first, and that is sat at Fraser House on Netherhall Road in the city.
Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs), and every car has dual controls and full insurance. You can ask for a female driving instructor or a male driving instructor when you book, and we will do our best to match you.
Alma is a family-run school, set up in Doncaster in 2022 by Loredana and Alexandru. Loredana is especially good with nervous learners, while Diana teaches automatic and is used to fitting lessons around busy family timetables. Read what pupils say on our reviews page, and check current lesson and package costs on the prices page or in our guide to driving lesson prices in Doncaster.
Still deciding on a gearbox? Our manual or automatic licence guide sets out the difference. For the tests themselves, read how to pass your theory test first time and what to expect on the Doncaster driving test.

Yes. We collect from homes across DN4, from the streets off Balby Road and Warmsworth Road down to the Woodfield estate and Lakeside. We can also meet you at Astrea Academy Woodfields after school, or at a workplace on Carr Hill Industrial Estate, as long as there is somewhere safe to stop.
It sits on the opposite side of the city, on Shaw Wood Business Park about three miles from the centre on the Armthorpe side. You can get there through the city centre or by White Rose Way and the M18. We usually drive it a few times before your test so the trip itself holds no surprises.
Yes. White Rose Way is a dual carriageway, and learners can use it with their instructor once they are ready for higher speeds. It is a good place to work on lane discipline and on planning early for the roundabouts near Lakeside Village and the Dome.
No. A provisional licence is all you need to start, and you can apply for one at 15 years and 9 months, then drive from your 17th birthday. You must pass the theory test before booking the practical, and a pass stays valid for two years, so many Balby learners sit it after a few lessons.
