How much do driving lessons cost in Doncaster?

By Alma Driving School · Updated 23 October 2026 · 3 min read

Most of what you spend learning to drive goes on lessons, with a handful of fixed fees on top. This guide sets out our current prices and the official fees, then puts them together into a realistic budget so you can plan before you book.

The fixed costs every learner pays

Whichever driving school you choose, these fees are the same. They are set by the government and paid directly to DVLA or DVSA.

FeeCost
Provisional driving licence, applied for online£34
Provisional driving licence, applied for by post£43
Theory test£23
Practical driving test on a weekday£62
Practical driving test in the evening, at a weekend or on a bank holiday£75

Tests that start at 4:30pm or later count as evening tests. You can apply for a provisional licence from 15 years and 9 months, and most people can start driving lessons at 17. When you are ready, you book your practical test on GOV.UK.

How many lessons will you need?

There is no minimum number of lessons. DVSA advises taking your test only when you can drive safely without any instruction, and everyone reaches that point at a different stage. These things make the biggest difference:

  • How often you drive. Two lessons a week keeps your skills fresh, so less time goes on going over the last lesson.
  • Private practice. Driving with a family member or friend between lessons adds hours without adding lesson fees.
  • Your starting point. Learners who have driven before, or who learn in an automatic car, often need fewer hours.

After your first lesson your instructor will give you an honest estimate. If you have already had lessons elsewhere, a mock driving test shows how close you are to test standard.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Book a package once you know you are staying. The hourly rate drops with each package size, down to £35.67 an hour for manual lessons.
  • Practise privately if you can. Your supervisor must be over 21 and must have held a full licence for the type of car you are learning in for at least 3 years. You also need learner insurance on the car you use.
  • Use the free official revision tools. The DVSA practice theory test and The Highway Code are free online, and passing your theory first time saves paying the £23 fee twice.
  • Book your test when you are ready. If you do not pass, you pay the test fee again, and the earliest new date is at least 10 working days away.

Frequently asked questions

Do you charge a joining fee?

No. You only pay for the lessons you book, either one lesson at a time or as a package.

Is the test fee included in a lesson package?

No. The practical test fee is paid to DVSA when you book your test. Our packages cover tuition only.

Can I start with one lesson before booking a package?

Yes. Many learners book a 1.5 or 2 hour lesson first, then choose a package once they have met their instructor.
