Driving lessons in Bessacarr

Alma Driving School teaches learners right across Bessacarr, from the closes off Stoops Lane to the newer homes of Bessacarr Grange. We collect you from home, school, college or work in a dual controlled car and build your driving on the roads you already know, then take you further afield as your skills grow.

Where Bessacarr is and where we pick you up

Bessacarr sits on the south-east edge of Doncaster in the DN4 postcode district, with most of the suburb lying south of the A638 Bawtry Road. Cantley is its neighbour to the north-east, and the two are so closely woven together that plenty of pupils are not sure which one they live in. South of the M18 is Bessacarr Grange, a largely 1990s neighbourhood with its own quiet loops of housing.

Most lessons begin at your front door, but you can be collected anywhere that suits your week. Common pick-up points include Willow Primary School on Alston Road, Bessacarr Primary on Ellers Avenue, Hall Cross Academy's lower school near the Dome, and the shops at Nostell Place. If you work at the Doncaster Leisure Park on Bawtry Road, we can meet you after your shift instead.

Bessacarr was mostly built from the 1960s onwards as private housing, so the estate roads are wide, with grass verges, cul-de-sacs and driveways. That makes it a good place for a first lesson, because there is room to stop and think before you try again without a queue forming behind you.

How your lessons progress across Bessacarr

Your instructor plans each lesson so the roads match your stage. Here is the usual order of things for a Bessacarr learner, although nobody moves on until they are ready.

  1. Quiet closes off Stoops Lane. Streets such as Howden Close and Laneham Close are ideal for the cockpit drill and for moving off and stopping at the kerb.
  2. Ellers Road and Bessacarr Lane. Longer residential roads with parked cars and give way lines, where you learn proper observation at junctions.
  3. Joining Bawtry Road. Turning out of Stoops Lane or Warren Lane onto the A638 teaches you to judge gaps in steady traffic and buses.
  4. The dual carriageway north of Cantley Lane. Where the B1396 meets Bawtry Road, the A638 becomes a dual carriageway, which is where lane discipline and mirror checks start to matter.
  5. The Racecourse Roundabout and White Rose Way. Gliwice Way links Bawtry Road to the A6182, and the multi-lane roundabouts out towards Junction 3 of the M18 bring everything together at test standard.

Along the way you will cover the manoeuvres and the emergency stop, plus plenty of independent driving with a sat nav, so nothing on the day of your test feels new.

The drive from Bessacarr to the test centre

Doncaster's practical test centre sits on Shaw Wood Business Park opposite Sandall Park, out towards Armthorpe. From Bessacarr the natural way there is north along Bawtry Road, past the Dome to the Racecourse Roundabout, then onto the A18 Leger Way, which runs beside Doncaster Racecourse and on through Intake to the Sandall Park roundabout and Thorne Road.

That one drive takes in a dual carriageway, a large multi-lane roundabout, a busy single carriageway section and the kind of junctions you find around the test centre. DVSA does not publish test routes, so we do not teach a fixed circuit. Instead we make sure you can handle roads like the ones you will meet on test, whichever direction the examiner asks you to go. For more on the day itself, read our guide to what to expect at the Doncaster driving test.

Lessons for Bessacarr learners

Every lesson type we offer is available in Bessacarr. Each link below explains how that lesson works on local roads.

Choosing your instructor and planning your lessons

Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs). Our cars carry dual controls and full insurance. Some Bessacarr pupils feel more at ease with one of our female instructors, while others ask for a male instructor. Mention your preference when you first get in touch and the match is arranged before lesson one.

Loredana and Alexandru founded Alma in 2022 and still run it as a family business from Armthorpe, a few miles up the road. Bookings are taken on 07402 034084 by phone or WhatsApp. For costs, see the current lesson prices, where block booking packages are listed too, and the article on what Doncaster driving lessons cost. Feedback from past pupils is collected on the Alma reviews page.

Not sure which gearbox to learn in? Our guide on choosing a manual or automatic licence sets out the differences, and the theory test guide helps you get the first exam out of the way.

Questions from Bessacarr learners

Do you cover Bessacarr Grange as well as the main part of Bessacarr?

Yes. We pick up from Bessacarr Grange south of the M18 as well as the older streets around Stoops Lane and Alston Road. Lessons can start wherever you live in DN4, and your instructor will plan the first drive around the quietest roads near your home.

How far is the test centre from Bessacarr?

The Doncaster test centre is on Shaw Wood Way, on the Armthorpe side of the city across from Sandall Park. From Bessacarr you head north on Bawtry Road, round the Racecourse Roundabout and along Leger Way. It is only a few miles, and the drive makes useful practice in its own right.

Can I be picked up from Hall Cross lower school?

We can collect you from school or college as long as the pick-up point is safe and it fits the school's rules for visitors. Many Bessacarr pupils prefer to start a lesson from home after school instead, which also gives you a few minutes to settle before you drive.

Is Bessacarr a good place to learn to drive?

It is a very useful mix. The 1960s and 1970s estates give you wide, calm roads for the basics, while the A638 Bawtry Road, the A18 Leger Way and the A6182 White Rose Way are all close by for dual carriageway and roundabout work once you are ready.

What do I need before my first lesson?

You need a provisional driving licence, which you can apply for on GOV.UK from 15 years and 9 months, and you can start driving at 17. Bring your licence to the first lesson and wear comfortable shoes with a thin sole so you can feel the pedals.
