Feeling anxious about driving is far more common than most people admit. Our nervous driver lessons in Bessacarr begin wherever you feel safest, often a cul-de-sac near home, and only move on to busier roads once you tell us you are ready.
The first job is to find roads where there is no pressure. Bessacarr is well suited to this. The private estates built from the 1960s onwards are full of closes and loops with almost no through traffic, such as Roxby Close and Howden Close, two of the closes leading off Stoops Lane. If you live in Bessacarr Grange, the 1990s streets south of the M18 are similarly calm.
Timing helps as much as location. We can avoid the school-run rush near Willow Primary on Alston Road and Bessacarr Primary on Ellers Avenue, and steer clear of the evening peak on Bawtry Road until you feel ready for it. On a St Leger day in September, when race traffic builds around the racecourse, we simply stay local.
Each step only happens when the one before feels easy. Nobody is pushed onto a road they are not ready for.
If a day goes badly, we step back a stage. Going backwards for a lesson is part of the process and nothing to worry about. Your instructor will note what unsettled you, and the next lesson revisits it on a quieter road before trying again.
The right instructor makes a huge difference to a nervous learner. Loredana, who co-founded Alma, is especially good with people who are anxious or have lost their confidence. If you would feel more relaxed with a woman beside you, ask for a female driving instructor when you book.
Several of our male instructors are known for a quiet approach too. FoFo works well with nervous learners, and Sergiu explains why a mistake happened and never shouts. You can read about them on our male instructors page.
You can find out more on our main nervous driver lessons page or return to the driving lessons in Bessacarr page. If you live closer to Ascot Avenue or Everingham Road, see our nervous driver lessons in Cantley. Many nervous learners also prefer automatic driving lessons in Bessacarr, because there is one less thing to think about.

Yes. Mistakes are how everyone learns, and our instructors expect them. Your instructor will explain what happened calmly and let you try again in a quiet spot. Nobody at Alma will shout or rush you, however many attempts something takes.
Absolutely. You can spend as long as you like in the closes off Stoops Lane or around Bessacarr Grange before moving on. We only introduce busier roads such as Bawtry Road when you say you feel ready, and we will always check with you first.
Many of our nervous pupils have had lessons elsewhere that did not work out. We start again at whatever level feels comfortable for you, even if you have driven before, and rebuild your confidence from there without judgement.
It can help. An automatic removes the clutch and gears, so stalling at a busy junction is not a worry and you can focus on the road. You would get an automatic-only licence, so think about whether you might need to drive a manual in the future.
