Driving can make a big difference to independence, and Alma works with disabled learners and people on the Motability Scheme across Balby. We teach in automatic cars fitted with dual controls. Mention any adaptation or support needs when you ring, so your first lesson can be planned properly.
Most people have to wait until 17 to drive a car. Learners awarded the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component, or whose claim for it is in progress, can begin at 16. You will need your provisional licence in your hand before the first lesson, and the application on GOV.UK asks about health conditions that could affect your driving.
Those questions are worth answering carefully. If a condition affects how you use the pedals or the steering wheel, it pays to find out early which controls would help, and that is where an assessment comes in.
The Motability Foundation runs a driving lessons grant worth up to 40 hours of tuition. To qualify you need to be on the Motability Scheme with your theory test already passed, and you must meet further conditions set by the Foundation, one of which is getting a means-tested benefit.
Grant-funded lessons are organised by the Foundation directly, so speak to them before anything else. Their number is 0800 500 3186, and the details sit on the Motability Foundation driving lessons page. Anyone who does not qualify, or who would prefer to get going straight away, is welcome to book with Alma and pay privately.
Not sure what you need? Driving Mobility is a charity that assesses people for car driving and for vehicle adaptations. Its Doncaster outreach centre saves a Balby learner the trip to Leeds, although Doncaster appointments are booked through the Leeds centre. Visit drivingmobility.org.uk to start.
The report you get afterwards can then shape your lessons, so it is well worth sharing it with your instructor before you begin.
Lessons begin at your front door wherever you live in DN4, from a terraced street off Balby Road to a newer home on the Woodfield estate.
If home is not practical, pick somewhere with space around the car. The car parks at Lakeside Village are one choice. St Catherine's House at Woodfield Park is another, and its café is handy for anyone waiting for you. Tell us how long you usually need to get settled in the car, and we will build that into the booking.
If you use a wheelchair or a walking aid, say so when you book. It helps us think about where to park for pick-up and how much room you will need beside the car.
Every Motability lesson uses an automatic gearbox, so there is no clutch pedal and no gear lever to move once you are in drive. Early lessons stay on calm roads around Plantation Road and Whisperwood Drive. After that, lessons bring in Tickhill Road and the A630, and White Rose Way gives dual carriageway practice when you are ready for it.
Energy levels can change from one day to the next. If you need to cut a session short or move a lesson, just let us know.
