A refresher lesson is for anyone who already holds a full licence but would like help getting back behind the wheel. From Cantley we can start on the roads you know best and work towards the roundabouts and dual carriageways you have been avoiding.
Cantley's good bus links have long made it popular with retirees. Some people who have relied on the 357 or the Bawtry Road services for years decide they want to drive again. Others are recent arrivals who passed elsewhere and do not yet know Doncaster's road layout.
Some come to us after a collision, or a near miss that left them shaken. Some have bought a different type of car, often moving from manual to automatic. Whatever the reason, the first lesson starts with a chat about what you want to get out of it.
Your instructor collects you from home, perhaps on Goodison Boulevard or near Cantley Park, and starts with a short chat about your driving history and what worries you. Then you drive a quiet loop of estate roads while the instructor watches your mirror work and road position without saying much.
After ten or fifteen minutes you pull over and talk it through. Habits that slip over the years, such as late signals or speed drifting up on residential roads, are easy to fix once someone points them out. The rest of the lesson moves on to whichever road you picked at the start. For many people that means Bawtry Road or the Racecourse Roundabout.
If you last drove regularly a decade or more ago, the A6182 will look very different. White Rose Way was upgraded to a dual carriageway between Lakeside Village and the M18, with the work completed in 2013. South of Junction 3, Great Yorkshire Way was built in two phases. The first opened in 2016, and the second, finished in 2018, links through to the A638.
It was built to improve access to Rossington and the iPort site as well as Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which has since closed. Driving it with an instructor once or twice takes away the uncertainty about where the lanes split and which exit to take.
If your goal is to visit family further afield or commute beyond Doncaster, motorway confidence matters. From Cantley, the M18 at Junction 3 is a short drive via the A6182, so a refresher lesson can include joining from the slip road at the national speed limit. After that come lane changes and leaving at the right junction. For a more structured session, see our motorway lessons and Pass Plus.
