Disabled learners in Cantley can learn to drive with Alma in automatic cars fitted with dual controls. Whether a condition is visible or not, the first step is a conversation, so call us to explain what you need and we will be straight with you about how we can help.
Most lessons start from home, which is often the easiest option on Cantley's estates where you can usually park close to the door. If somewhere else suits better, the area around the St Wilfrid's shops and health centre, or the parade on Everingham Road, can make a convenient meeting point.
Please tell us about wheelchair transfers, walking aids, prosthetics or any condition that affects your strength or concentration. That information shapes how long the lesson lasts and where it goes.
Cantley's good bus links mean some learners prefer to meet us after a short ride, for example at a stop on Bawtry Road. Wherever we meet, your instructor will check that you can get in and out of the car comfortably before the lesson starts, and will help adjust anything that needs it.
All Motability lessons with Alma are in automatic cars. You do not need to operate a clutch or move a gear lever, so the physical demands are lower. That helps many learners with conditions affecting a leg or a hand, and those whose energy levels vary. Your instructor will spend time getting the seat and mirrors right before you move.
Early lessons use calm streets such as Pine Road or the gardens off Ascot Avenue, then the bus routes of Everingham Road and Goodison Boulevard, and later Cantley Lane and the A638.
Car drivers normally have to be 17. The exception is for people getting the enhanced mobility rate of PIP, or with a claim for it in progress, who may begin at 16. A provisional licence is needed either way, and the application is made on GOV.UK. The form includes questions about your health, and the DVLA may ask for more information.
Through its driving lessons grant, the Motability Foundation can pay for up to 40 hours of tuition. It is aimed at Motability Scheme customers with a disability who also meet extra conditions, one being a means-tested benefit, and who already hold a theory test pass.
Grant-funded lessons are arranged directly by the Foundation, not by Alma, so your first call should be to them on 0800 500 3186, or visit the Motability Foundation grants page. Learners who fall outside the criteria, or who do not want to wait, are welcome to book with us and pay for lessons themselves.
A specialist assessment can tell you whether you need adaptations and which ones. The charity Driving Mobility carries out car driving and adaptation assessments, and Doncaster learners can be seen at its local outreach centre after booking through the Leeds centre. If you have had an assessment, share the recommendations with us before your first lesson.

Grant-funded lessons are organised by the Motability Foundation itself, so contact them on 0800 500 3186 to check eligibility. Anyone not eligible, or keen to begin without waiting, can still learn with Alma by paying privately in an automatic dual controlled car.
It can be. Conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes, anxiety or chronic fatigue can affect driving or how long a lesson should last. Tell us what you are comfortable sharing and we will plan around it. You must also tell the DVLA about certain medical conditions.
Our lessons are taught in Alma's automatic dual controlled cars, which are insured for tuition. If your own car has specific adaptations, speak to Driving Mobility as well as to us about the best way to prepare, so that your training matches what you will drive.
No. Everyone takes the same practical test at the Doncaster test centre. When booking, you can tell DVSA about a disability or health condition, and reasonable adjustments may be possible. Your instructor can help you prepare for the format.
