Intensive driving courses in Intake

An intensive course packs your lessons into days or weeks instead of months. From Intake the test centre on Shaw Wood Way is only a couple of miles away, so each course day can finish on the kind of roads you will drive on test. Every course begins with a free assessment drive.

The free assessment drive comes first

Before anyone suggests a course length, an instructor collects you from home in Intake and takes you out for an assessment drive. It costs nothing and there is no obligation. If you have driven before, we will watch how you handle Armthorpe Road and the Leger Way roundabout. If you are brand new, the assessment starts on a quiet street such as Lonsdale Avenue.

From that drive we work out roughly how many hours you are likely to need. The length of the course is set after the assessment and the price follows from it, so nobody is sold a block of hours they do not need.

What a course day from Intake can look like

No two days are the same, but a typical day mixes estate roads with A-roads and finishes near the test centre. One example:

  1. First session. Warm up with junctions on Shaftesbury Avenue and the crescents nearby, then a reversing exercise such as bay parking or pulling up on the right.
  2. Second session. Armthorpe Road past Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Outwood Academy Danum, working on planning for buses and people crossing between parked cars.
  3. After a proper break. The A18 from the Armthorpe Road roundabout down to the Racecourse Roundabout at Belle Vue, building lane discipline at higher speeds.
  4. Final session. Thorne Road and Sandall Park near the test centre on Shaw Wood Way, including a stretch of independent driving following a sat nav.

Breaks matter. Concentration drops after a long spell behind the wheel, and your instructor will stop for a rest before tiredness turns into mistakes.

Who intensive courses suit in Intake

  • Students finishing at school or college for the summer who want a licence before starting work or university.
  • Shift workers at Doncaster Royal Infirmary who can line up several days off in a row.
  • People starting a new job that needs a licence by a set date.
  • Learners who have already had lessons elsewhere and want to finish quickly.

It is less suitable if you can only manage an hour here and there. You need to be free for several hours on each course day. Check work and family plans before you book.

Your theory test and practical test date

The theory test has to be passed before the practical. It has 50 multiple-choice questions, with 43 needed to pass, followed by a hazard perception section of 14 video clips where the pass mark is 44 out of 75. Your theory pass stays valid for two years.

The practical test is booked as part of the course. Test dates depend on DVSA availability, and we plan your lessons so that the final days are spent on the roads around Thorne Road and Shaw Wood Way. If you have not booked the theory yet, do it on GOV.UK and use our theory test revision guide.

Intensive driving courses in Intake: your questions

How long is an intensive course from Intake?

It depends on the assessment drive. Someone who has never driven needs a much longer course than a learner who already copes well with roundabouts. We set the length once the assessment is done and price the course from there, so you know what you are signing up for before you commit.

Can a course fit around hospital shifts?

Often, yes. If you work at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, tell us your rota when you call 07402 034084. We can collect you from the hospital or from home in Intake and spread the course across your days off, as long as you can give it several hours at a time.

What happens if I do not pass at the end of the course?

Your instructor will go through the examiner's feedback with you and suggest a few more lessons on whatever let you down, then help you rebook. A second attempt is common, and a mock test before the retake can show whether the weak spots are fixed.

Do I need my own car to practise between course days?

No. Every course lesson is in one of our dual controlled, fully insured cars. Extra practice with a family member can help, but only if they meet the legal rules for supervising a learner driver and the car is insured for you to drive.
