Disabled learners in Bentley, including people on the Motability Scheme, learn with us in automatic cars fitted with dual controls. Give us a ring before your first lesson and mention any adaptation you use or think you might need, so the plan fits you from the start.
Every Motability lesson we teach in Bentley uses an automatic gearbox, with a second set of pedals on the instructor's side. Taking the clutch away removes a job for your left leg and hand, which leaves more energy for steering and looking around. Call 07402 034084 or message us on WhatsApp before booking, and describe what you need so we can be straight with you about what is possible. Our main Motability driving lessons page explains the approach in more detail.
Lessons follow the same path to test standard as any other pupil. You start on quiet streets such as Asquith Road, move on to the A19 through Bentley, and later drive roads like those around the Doncaster test centre at Shaw Wood Business Park. Your instructor will build in breaks if long sessions are tiring.
The normal rule is that you apply for a provisional licence at fifteen and three quarters and drive from seventeen. There is one exception that matters to some Bentley families. A young person who receives the enhanced mobility rate of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or who is waiting on a claim for it, is allowed to drive a car from 16. That year's head start can change how a student gets to college, instead of depending on lifts or the 51 and 363 buses along Askern Road. Applications go through GOV.UK.
For most Motability learners, being collected at the front door is simplest, and it means the lesson starts the moment you sit down. If home does not suit, there are other spots nearby.
Once you are in the car, the streets around Asquith Road and Victoria Road are calm places to begin, before you move on to Askern Road and Bentley Road on the A19.
The Motability Foundation offers a grant that can pay for as many as 40 hours of tuition. To qualify you must be a Motability Scheme customer who meets some further conditions (one is that you receive a means-tested benefit), and you must hold a theory test pass already. The Foundation organises grant-funded tuition directly, so speak to them before anything else, either on 0800 500 3186 or through the Motability Foundation website. Anyone who does not qualify, or who would sooner not wait, is welcome to book with Alma privately.
The charity Driving Mobility holds car driving and adaptation assessments at an outreach centre in Doncaster, booked via its centre in Leeds. An assessment gives you a clear picture of the controls that will suit you before lessons begin, which saves guesswork later.
If you live north of Toll Bar, have a look at Motability driving lessons in Adwick le Street. Some learners also combine Motability lessons with our nervous driver lessons in Bentley approach, starting extra slowly. For the full list, go back to driving lessons in Bentley.

No. Lessons paid for by the grant are organised by the Motability Foundation itself, so Alma does not provide them. Ring the Foundation on 0800 500 3186 to find out whether you qualify. You can still learn with us in Bentley as a private pupil if you are not eligible or would rather begin straight away.
Only in one situation. A teenager who receives the enhanced mobility rate of PIP, or who has a claim for it in progress, may drive a car from 16 once their provisional licence arrives. Everybody else has to wait until 17 before their first lesson on the road.
An automatic with dual controls, so your instructor can brake from the passenger side. If you rely on a particular adaptation, mention it on the phone before booking and we will be honest about what we can accommodate. A Driving Mobility assessment is a good way to pin down exactly what you need.
Bentley learners are tested at the Doncaster centre in Shaw Wood Business Park, DN2 5YL, on the Armthorpe side of the city. You can sit the test in our automatic car, and if a familiar face helps, your instructor is allowed to ride along in the back seat.
It depends on your needs. Some learners can start in a standard automatic car straight away, while others need an assessment first to find the right controls or adaptations. If you are unsure, contact Driving Mobility, then tell us the outcome so your instructor can plan your first lesson in Bentley around it.
