Never sat in the driver's seat before? That is fine. Your first lesson in Bentley starts on a quiet street, with the engine off, and your instructor explains everything before you move. By the end of the hour most beginners have moved off and stopped several times.
You need a provisional driving licence before you can take a lesson. You can apply for one on GOV.UK from 15 years and 9 months, and you can start driving a car at 17. It is worth starting your theory revision around the same time. You cannot book the practical test until you have passed the theory test, so learners who leave it late often find themselves test-ready with no theory pass.
Bring your provisional licence and wear comfortable, flat shoes. Your instructor will pick you up from home anywhere in Bentley. Work and college pick-ups are fine if they are easier.
We usually start beginners on the residential roads off The Avenue, such as Edward Street and Alexandra Street, or around Asquith Road in the New Village. These streets are short with light traffic, and there is room to pull in and stop. Bentley Community Woodland is nearby, so the roads are calm outside the morning school run.
Your instructor drives you there if you would rather not start outside your own house. Some pupils prefer to begin away from neighbours and family watching from the window, which is perfectly normal. If you live near Toll Bar or Arksey, your instructor will find a similar quiet road close to home, so the drive to your first practice spot is short.
Before the engine starts, you learn the cockpit drill: doors closed, seat adjusted so you can press the pedals fully, steering wheel at a comfortable height, head restraint in line with your head, mirrors set, seatbelt on. You will do this at the start of every lesson until it becomes automatic.
Next comes the controls, then moving off. In a manual car that means finding the biting point and checking your mirrors and blind spot. Then you signal if needed before pulling away. In an automatic you release the brake and let the car creep. You then practise stopping safely at the kerb, using the mirrors before every change of speed or direction.
Your instructor explains each new skill with reference to the Highway Code, so the theory you revise at home lines up with what you are doing in the car.
Beginners can learn in a manual or an automatic car. See our main beginner driving lessons page for how a full course is planned, or automatic driving lessons in Bentley if you would rather skip the clutch. If you live closer to the river crossing, our beginner driving lessons in Doncaster town centre cover the city side. Everything else is on driving lessons in Bentley.

No. You only need a provisional licence to start lessons. You must pass the theory test before booking the practical test, though, so it makes sense to revise alongside your early lessons. A theory pass lasts two years.
Stalling is normal and expected. Every one of our cars has dual controls, so your instructor can brake if needed. Mistakes on the quiet streets around The Avenue are part of learning, and your instructor will explain what happened and how to fix it.
Many beginners start with a longer lesson so there is time for the cockpit drill and the controls before plenty of moving off and stopping. Ask about lesson lengths and block booking when you call, and see our prices page for current packages.
Of course. Your instructor can collect you and drive to a quieter street, such as those around Asquith Road. Lots of learners prefer to start away from home and only drive their own street once they feel more confident.
