Never sat in the driver's seat before? That is exactly where most of our Sprotbrough pupils start. Your first lesson takes place on quiet residential streets, at a pace that suits you, with an instructor who has dual controls if needed.
No one can take a driving lesson on a public road without a provisional licence in their name. Applications open three months before your 16th birthday, and in most cases the driving itself starts at 17. Learners who get the enhanced mobility rate of PIP, or who have claimed it, may begin at 16. The form is on GOV.UK, so send it off well before the date you hope to start.
You do not need to have passed your theory test to start lessons, but you will need a pass before you can book the practical test. Many Sprotbrough learners revise for the theory while they have their first few lessons, because what you see on the road helps the Highway Code make sense. Our guide on passing your theory test first time is a good place to start.
Your instructor will collect you from home, or from somewhere nearby like the central square or the Sainsbury's Local on Sprotbrough Road. They will then drive to a quiet spot themselves, so you do not have to set off on a busy road.
In Sprotbrough that usually means one of the residential streets branching off Melton Road, such as Castle Grove or Challenger Drive. These are lightly used roads with space to pull in, which is all you need for a first lesson.
Most people are surprised by how much they manage in that first session. If you need to stop and chat, that is fine. Your instructor can also take control with the dual controls if something unexpected happens.
Once moving off feels comfortable, we start turning left and right at junctions on quiet roads, then work up to joining Melton Road itself. That brings the first real traffic. You will meet the 219 bus at its stops along the road. Cars turn in and out of Spring Lane and Thorpe Lane, and people cross near the shops.
From there we introduce slopes on Boat Lane, longer drives along Sprotbrough Road towards Doncaster, and your first roundabouts. There is no fixed timetable. Your instructor will explain what comes next at the end of each lesson, and you can read more about how we teach on our main beginner driving lessons page.
It is worth deciding early. An automatic is quicker to learn but limits you to automatic cars, while a manual takes longer but lets you drive either. You can find out more on manual lessons in Sprotbrough.
If you are unsure, your first lesson can help you decide. Some people take to the clutch quickly on the quiet streets off Melton Road, while others find that juggling pedals takes all their concentration. Your instructor will give you an honest view, and you can move between our manual and automatic cars if that turns out to be the better choice.

Bring your provisional licence and any glasses or contact lenses you need for driving. Wear comfortable, flat shoes that let you feel the pedals properly. Everything else, including the dual controlled car, is provided by your instructor.
Usually not. Your instructor will drive you to a quiet residential street off Melton Road and you will spend the lesson learning the controls and practising moving off and stopping. Main roads come later, once you are ready.
It is best to keep the car to just you and your instructor so you can concentrate. Parents are welcome to chat with the instructor at pick-up or drop-off about how things are going, and to ask about practice between lessons.
