Mock driving test in Sprotbrough

A mock test is a dress rehearsal for the real thing. For learners in Sprotbrough it also covers the longest part of test day: getting from the west side of Doncaster across to the Armthorpe side, where the practical test centre sits.

How an Alma mock test works

Set aside about two hours, debrief included. Your instructor collects you from home and then behaves like an examiner for the drive, scoring it on the same DVSA marking sheet the real test uses. Afterwards you get a written debrief that stays with you, so you can look back at it before your test.

It is ideal if your test is a few weeks away, or if you have failed before and want a clear, honest view of where the faults came from.

We keep conditions as close to the real test as we can. Your instructor will not prompt you, and will only use the dual controls if safety requires it. If that happens, it goes on the sheet just as an examiner's intervention would on test day.

The parts of the test we rehearse

The real practical test lasts about 40 minutes, and the mock copies its structure closely:

  • An eyesight check first. You read a car number plate 20 metres away.
  • One tell me question at the roadside, then one show me question once you are moving.
  • Roughly 20 minutes of independent driving, with directions from a sat nav or from road signs.
  • A single reversing exercise. It could be a parallel park, or a bay park where you either drive in and reverse out or reverse in and drive out.
  • The other reversing option is pulling up on the right and reversing about two car lengths.
  • On some tests, an emergency stop as well.

Across the city from Sprotbrough

The test centre is at Shaw Wood Business Park, on the opposite side of Doncaster from the village. On many mocks we set off along Melton Road, follow Sprotbrough Road past Tennyson Avenue and Anchorage Lane to the A638 York Road, then continue through the North Bridge area. Your instructor gives directions in the same style an examiner would and says nothing else.

From there the mock moves onto roads like the ones you will meet around the test centre. Expect junctions and roundabouts that may be new to you. For independent driving, your instructor might ask you to follow signs for a place rather than read a sat nav. That shows quickly whether you can plan your lane and speed without help.

What the debrief tells you

Back at a quiet spot, your instructor goes through the marking sheet line by line. Minor errors are recorded as driving faults. Anything that could have caused danger is a serious fault, and anything that actually did is a dangerous fault. Up to 15 driving faults is allowed on the real test. A single serious or dangerous fault is enough to fail.

The written notes explain where each fault happened and what caused it. Typical points for Sprotbrough learners include late mirror checks before turning off Melton Road, approach speed at roundabouts in town and observation when pulling away from the kerb behind parked cars.

Timing your mock

We suggest booking a mock two to four weeks before the real test. That leaves enough lessons to fix anything it reveals. Some learners take a second mock in the final week. On an intensive driving course in Sprotbrough, one is normally included towards the end.

On the day itself, you can ask for your instructor to sit in the back. Find out more on the main mock driving test page and in what to expect at the Doncaster driving test. If you live nearer the city, see mock driving tests in Balby, and for everything else go to driving lessons in Sprotbrough.

Mock driving tests in Sprotbrough: your questions

Will my mock test follow the real test route?

The DVSA does not publish test routes, so nobody can drive the exact route in advance. What we can do is drive you from Sprotbrough to roads like those around the test centre. They have similar junctions and roundabouts, so the area feels familiar on the day.

How is the mock test scored?

Your instructor uses the DVSA marking sheet and marks every fault by how serious it is, just as an examiner would. At the end you get a written debrief explaining each fault and what to practise before your real test.

Is a mock worth it if I have failed before?

Yes. A mock recreates the pressure of the test, which often brings back the same mistakes. Seeing them written down, with an explanation of why they happened, makes it far easier to fix them before you go again.
