Motability Scheme lessons in Armthorpe

Alma teaches disabled learners and Motability Scheme customers in automatic cars with dual controls. Armthorpe is where our registered office is. We collect from your home in the village and plan each lesson around your needs, so please describe any adaptations or support you use when you get in touch.

Starting from your own front door

Being picked up from home removes the hardest part of many lessons, which is getting there. Whether you live on one of the older crescents off Doncaster Road or a newer road near Walstow Crescent, your instructor comes to you and you get into the car on familiar ground.

Other places we can meet in the village include the community centre on Church Street and the leisure centre beside Armthorpe Academy on Mere Lane. Tell us how much time you need to get in and out, and whether a wheelchair or mobility aid needs room in the car.

Driving at 16 with the PIP mobility component

Learners on the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component, including anyone whose claim is still being decided, can drive a car at 16 instead of 17. Your provisional licence application can be made on GOV.UK from 15 years and 9 months.

Some medical conditions have to be declared to DVLA before you drive. Check yours on the health conditions and driving pages of GOV.UK, and let your instructor know about anything that could affect a lesson, for example fatigue at certain times of day.

The Motability Foundation grant

The Motability Foundation runs a driving lessons grant that can cover a maximum of 40 hours for eligible Scheme customers. Being on the Scheme is not enough on its own. Applicants also need a means-tested benefit along with meeting other conditions, and they must already have their theory test pass.

Because the Foundation books grant lessons for you, talk to them on 0800 500 3186 before arranging anything. The Motability Foundation grant page explains the rules. If the grant is not an option for you, or the wait does not suit you, Alma can teach you as a private pupil instead.

Assessments with Driving Mobility

Driving Mobility, a national charity, holds car driving and adaptation assessments at an outreach centre in Doncaster, booked through its Leeds centre. An assessment is worth considering if you are unsure whether you need hand controls or other changes to a car.

Sharing the outcome with us before you start helps your instructor plan sensibly from the first lesson.

Lessons on Armthorpe's roads

All Motability lessons are in automatic cars with dual controls, so there is no clutch to operate and the instructor can brake if needed. Diana and Alecsandru both teach in automatic cars. The flat roads around the village make early lessons gentler, starting in quiet closes. Church Street and Doncaster Road follow, with the A18 later on.

Lessons can be shorter or longer depending on what suits you, and breaks are easy to build in. If one time of day suits your energy levels best, let us know. We will try to book around it. Lessons can also start from a relative's home in the village if that is easier on some days.

Motability Scheme driving lessons in Armthorpe: your questions

Does Alma provide lessons funded by the Motability Foundation?

No. The Foundation arranges grant-funded lessons itself, so speak to them first to check your eligibility. If you do not qualify, or you want to start sooner, you are welcome to learn with Alma as a private pupil in one of our automatic cars.

Can I start at 16 if I am waiting for a PIP decision?

If you have applied for the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component, you can start driving at 16, as long as you hold a provisional licence. Apply for the licence on GOV.UK, then ring us to arrange your first lesson.

What adaptations do your cars have?

Our cars are automatic and dual controlled. Please explain your needs when you call so we can be honest about whether our cars suit you. A Driving Mobility assessment can recommend specific adaptations if you need them.

Do I need to pass the theory test first?

You need a theory pass before booking your practical test, and it is also one of the conditions for the Motability Foundation grant. You can start practical lessons with Alma before passing it if you are learning privately.
