Feeling anxious about driving is common, and it is nothing to be embarrassed about. In Armthorpe we can begin in short, quiet closes a few streets from your home, leave the busier roads until you are ready and go at whatever speed suits you.
Parkway has a run of short closes leading off it, such as Cranfield Close and Ashfield Close. Places like these see very little traffic, which makes them a calm setting for a first lesson. Your instructor will park up, talk through how the car works and let you decide when to start the engine.
If you have driven before and had a bad experience, tell us. Your instructor will want to know what happened so the lesson can steer well clear of whatever triggered the fear until you are ready to face it.
Once moving off and stopping feel easy, you drive along Parkway and Nutwell Lane. Both are on the route of the 381 and 382 buses. Meeting a bus head on, or waiting behind one, becomes routine surprisingly quickly.
Tranmoor Lane and Mere Lane have five schools between them, so we take them in the middle of the day first and only add the school run once you are comfortable.
Church Street brings parked cars and shoppers. After that comes Doncaster Road, the Leger Way roundabout and eventually the A18. There is no deadline for any of it.
If one stage feels too much on a particular day, you simply drop back to the one before. Confidence rarely grows in a straight line, and a quieter lesson after a hard one is part of the plan.
Loredana, one of Alma's two co-founders, is especially good with nervous learners and drivers who have lost their confidence. FoFo also works well with anxious learners. Sergiu explains why a mistake happened and never shouts, and Nick focuses on hazard awareness, which helps many nervous drivers understand risk instead of fearing it.
Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs). Our cars are dual controlled, so your instructor can brake if needed, which many nervous learners find is the single most reassuring thing to know before they start.
If you would feel more relaxed with a woman in the passenger seat, choose from our female driving instructors. Our male driving instructors are equally patient.
An automatic takes stalling out of the picture altogether. Have a look at automatic driving lessons in Armthorpe if that appeals.
The main nervous driver lessons page explains our approach in more detail, and the Armthorpe driving lessons page lists pick-up points. Your instructor has dual controls and can slow or stop the car at any time. They will help you pull over somewhere safe, give you time to settle and talk through what happened. Panic usually fades as you learn that someone is always there to help.
Yes. Some nervous learners spend the first lesson getting used to the seat and controls with the engine off, parked in a quiet close. That is a perfectly good use of a lesson, and it often makes the second one much easier.
Not once you are ready. It has buses and parked cars as well as shoppers, so we leave it until you are comfortable on quieter roads. When you do drive it, your instructor will talk you through each section in advance.
We aim to keep you with the same instructor wherever possible, because trust matters to nervous learners. Tell us when you book if continuity is important to you, and whether you would prefer a male or female instructor.
