A full licence in the drawer does not help much if driving now feels daunting. Refresher lessons from Armthorpe put an approved instructor beside you on the village roads you know, then on the faster roads beyond them, until driving alone feels normal again.
No L plates are needed and there is no test to pass. Lessons cover whatever you want to work on, from a single junction to the motorway.
The A630 West Moor Link runs from Wheatley Hall Road past Edenthorpe and Armthorpe to junction 4 of the M18. It has been through a major widening scheme around the railway bridge near Edenthorpe, designed to give two lanes in each direction at what used to be a narrow pinch point. If you last drove it years ago, the layout may not match your memory.
The Highway Code has changed as well. Since 2022 it has set out a hierarchy of road users, with drivers expected to take more care of pedestrians and cyclists. One rule that catches returning drivers out is giving way to people waiting to cross a side road you are turning into. The Highway Code on GOV.UK has the full wording.
Junction 4 of the M18 is less than two miles from Armthorpe Academy on Mere Lane, so motorway confidence is a realistic goal for an Armthorpe refresher. From junction 4 the M18 links to the M180 at junction 5, the A1(M) at junction 2 and the M62 at junction 7, which covers most longer trips out of Doncaster.
A motorway refresher concentrates on joining from the slip road at a matching speed. After that it covers early mirror checks and lane changes with plenty of space around you. More detail is on our motorway lessons and Pass Plus page.
Not every returning driver wants the motorway. Many simply want to feel comfortable doing the school run on Mere Lane or Tranmoor Lane, finding a space near the shops on Church Street or getting round the Leger Way roundabout at rush hour without a knot in their stomach.
Your instructor will start wherever you choose, and you can build up in small steps. Some people need one lesson. Others like a short block spread over a few weeks.
Night driving is another common request. Judging speed and distance in the dark after a long break takes practice, and an evening lesson in winter is an easy way to cover it, including a run out towards the M18.
Parking is worth a session of its own. Bay parking in a supermarket car park and parallel parking between cars on Church Street both come up in everyday driving, and they are often the skills returning drivers feel rustiest on.

No. Refresher lessons are in our dual controlled, fully insured cars, which means your instructor can step in if needed. That safety net is often what makes the first drive after a long break feel manageable.
Yes. Moving from manual to automatic is a common reason for a refresher. You will practise creep, braking with one foot and using the parking brake, first in the quieter streets of the village and then in traffic on Doncaster Road.
Wherever you feel safe. Your instructor will talk through what happened and begin on quiet roads before moving on gradually. Loredana, one of Alma's co-founders, is particularly good with drivers who have lost their confidence, and you can ask for her or another female instructor.
