Refresher driving lessons in Barnby Dun

These sessions suit anyone with a full licence who has been off the road for a while, or whose confidence has slipped since passing. We start from your home in Barnby Dun, find out what is worrying you and build up from there at a pace you are comfortable with.

Who books a refresher locally

Refresher pupils come to us for lots of reasons. Some passed years ago and have relied on the train from Kirk Sandall or a lift ever since. Some have moved to Barnby Dun and do not know the roads. Others have had an incident and want help getting back behind the wheel, or have changed to a different kind of car, perhaps their first automatic.

Whatever the reason, nobody is marking you and nobody will judge you. You set the goal. That might be the school run to Church Road, the drive to work on the industrial estate, or a motorway trip to see family.

Starting with an honest first drive

Your first refresher lesson begins with a chat about your driving history and what you want to achieve. Then you drive, usually around the quieter parts of the village first, so your instructor can see where your skills are strong and where they have slipped.

Most returning drivers find the basics come back quickly. What tends to need work is observation at busier junctions, judging gaps on roundabouts and confidence at higher speeds. Sergiu is good at explaining why a mistake happened rather than just pointing it out, which suits drivers who want to understand their habits.

Local roads that catch returning drivers out

The lift bridge and level crossings

If you have not driven in the village for a while, the bascule bridge on Madam Lane can feel awkward when it lifts for a boat and a queue forms behind you. The level crossings on Stainforth Road and Bramwith Road need the same calm approach, and a refresher lesson is a good chance to rehearse them.

Barnby Dun Road and Long Sandall

Barnby Dun Road runs under a low railway bridge between Kirk Sandall and Clay Lane, and lorries have been stuck under it before, causing long queues back to Wheatley Hall Road. If you now drive a van or a taller vehicle, it is worth knowing where the height limits are. The roundabouts around Clay Lane and Shaw Lane are busy at peak times and reward early lane choice.

New shops and new traffic

The Aldi on Doncaster Road in Kirk Sandall opened in 2021, so drivers returning after a long break may find the road busier than they remember, with more cars turning in and out.

The Highway Code has changed

If you learned to drive a long time ago, a few rules may be new to you. The Highway Code was updated in 2022, including a hierarchy of road users that places more responsibility on drivers of larger vehicles, and clearer guidance on giving way to pedestrians waiting to cross at junctions. Your instructor will point these out as they come up. You can read the full Highway Code on GOV.UK.

Building up to faster roads and the motorway

Once you are comfortable locally, we move on to the A18 along Thorne Road through Edenthorpe and the A630 towards junction 4 of the M18. These roads bring faster traffic and more lane changes. Junction 5 of the M18 links to the M180, so a short motorway run is easy to fit in when you are ready. Our motorway lessons page explains how those sessions work.

Refresher driving lessons in Barnby Dun: your questions

Do refresher lessons happen in my car or yours?

Our lessons are in our own dual controlled, fully insured cars, which means your instructor can step in if needed. Once your confidence is back, many drivers find the move to their own car easy. If you have just bought an automatic, we can teach you in one of our automatic cars first.

How many sessions should a returning driver plan for?

It varies a lot. Some drivers only want one or two lessons to get used to local roads, while others who have not driven for many years prefer a longer run of lessons. Your instructor will give you an honest view after the first drive.

I had an accident and now I am scared to drive. Can you help?

Yes. Rebuilding confidence after an incident is exactly what refresher lessons are for. We start on quiet roads and only move on when you feel ready. Loredana and FoFo are both known for working well with drivers who have lost confidence.

Do refresher lessons include the motorway?

They can. Since 2018 even learner drivers can take motorway lessons with an approved instructor in a dual controlled car, so a refresher pupil with a full licence is well within the rules. We build up to it through the A630 and the M18 junctions once you are comfortable.
