If you have a disability or drive through the Motability Scheme, you can learn with Alma in Barnby Dun in one of our dual controlled automatics. Lessons begin at your own front door, and the flat streets beside the River Don make an easy place to get used to the car before heading towards Kirk Sandall.
Every disabled learner is different, so the first conversation matters more than any lesson plan. When you ring us on 07402 034084 or send us a WhatsApp message, please describe your condition. Let us know which adaptations you use now or expect to need. It also helps to know how long you can comfortably sit in a car. That helps us plan sensible lesson lengths and pick the right car.
Our Motability lessons use automatic cars. With no clutch pedal to work, the car asks less of your left leg and your concentration, which many disabled learners find makes a real difference. Our main page on Motability driving lessons covers the wider service.
Most people have to wait until 17 to drive a car on the road. There is an exception for anyone awarded the top tier of PIP mobility support (officially the enhanced mobility rate), and for anyone with a claim for it in progress: they may drive a car from 16. A provisional licence is still the first step, and the form lives on GOV.UK.
Starting a year early gives younger learners in the village extra time to build up slowly, which can be useful if fatigue or pain limits how often you can drive.
The Motability Foundation runs a driving lessons grant that covers as many as 40 hours of tuition. To qualify you need to be a Motability Scheme customer who meets a few additional criteria (getting a means-tested benefit is among them). A theory test pass must already be in your pocket.
The Foundation arranges grant-funded lessons itself, so speak to them about eligibility before you commit to anything. Ring 0800 500 3186 or read the Motability Foundation driving lessons page. Learners who fall outside the criteria, or who would rather not wait, are welcome to book with Alma privately.
If you are unsure what adaptations you might need, booking a driving assessment before lessons can save a lot of guesswork. Driving Mobility, a national charity, offers car driving and adaptation assessments at an outreach centre in Doncaster. Appointments there are arranged by its Leeds centre. An assessor can advise on controls such as hand controls or a steering aid. Find out more at Driving Mobility.
Bring the assessment report to your first lesson if you have one. It helps your instructor understand what works for you.
Most Motability pupils are collected from home, so you do not need to get anywhere first. If you are coming from college or work by train, Kirk Sandall station has a long ramp down from Sandall Lane, giving step-free access to both platforms, and we can meet you at the top.
Early lessons tend to stay on the quieter streets near Church Road and Top Road. As your confidence grows we bring in the lift bridge on Madam Lane, where waiting patiently is the main skill, then the run along Station Road and Doncaster Road through Kirk Sandall towards the test centre.
Learners just south of the village can book Motability driving lessons in Kirk Sandall, and those in Armthorpe, by junction 4 of the M18, can look at Motability lessons in Armthorpe. No. Grant lessons are set up by the Motability Foundation, and the first step is a call to them on 0800 500 3186 to see whether you qualify. Anyone outside the criteria, or keen to get going quickly, can still book private lessons with us in an automatic.
Our Motability lessons use dual controlled automatics. Mention any adaptations you rely on during your first phone call or WhatsApp chat, and we will be straight with you about what is possible. A Driving Mobility assessment is the best way to pin down which adaptations suit you.
We can agree lesson lengths that suit your energy levels and any medical needs. Some learners prefer shorter lessons more often, others are happy with longer sessions. Let us know what works for you, and our prices page shows the current lesson options.
The content is the same, but you can ask for support when you book, such as extra time. You need to pass the theory test before booking the practical test, and before applying for the Motability Foundation grant. Book through GOV.UK.
