Alma Driving School teaches learners in Barnby Dun, the canal-side village about four miles north-east of Doncaster city centre in the DN3 postcode. Lessons start at your door, settle you on the quiet village streets first and then move out through Kirk Sandall and Long Sandall towards the roads around the Doncaster test centre.
Barnby Dun sits between Arksey and Stainforth, with the River Don on one side and the River Dun Navigation running past the edge of the village. Together with Kirk Sandall it forms the parish of Barnby Dun with Kirk Sandall, so most learners here already know the drive along Doncaster Road into the neighbouring suburb.
Loredana and Alexandru founded Alma as a family business in 2022, and the school's registered office is just down the road in Armthorpe. Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs). The cars carry dual controls and full insurance. You can learn in a manual or an automatic.
The village is a good place to learn because it packs a lot into a small area. Within a few minutes of most homes you have estate roads with parked cars, a school-run street, a lift bridge over the navigation and level crossings on the lanes to the north. Beyond that, the busier roads towards Wheatley Hall Road are close enough to reach in one lesson.
Every learner moves at their own pace, but a typical progression for a Barnby Dun pupil looks something like this:
Most pupils are collected from home, but we can also collect you from work or from school and college. Popular spots in and around the village include:
If you are still waiting for your provisional licence, you can apply on GOV.UK from 15 years and 9 months old and start driving at 17.
The Doncaster practical test centre is at Heather Court on Shaw Wood Business Park, DN2 5YL, just off Thorne Road (A18) beside Sandall Park, a few miles south-west of the village. From Barnby Dun the usual drive is along Station Road and Doncaster Road through Kirk Sandall, then Barnby Dun Road towards Clay Lane. It is one of the shorter trips to the test centre from any village we cover.
DVSA does not publish test routes, so we never promise that a particular road will come up. What we do is make sure you are comfortable with the kind of roundabouts and lane changes you will meet around Long Sandall and Wheatley Hall Road. Our guide to what to expect on the Doncaster driving test explains the eyesight check, the show me tell me questions and the independent driving section.
Lesson costs and block booking packages are kept up to date on our prices page, and our guide to driving lesson prices in Doncaster explains what to compare.
Some learners feel more at ease with a particular instructor, and that is a perfectly reasonable thing to ask for. Just say when you book whether you would prefer a female driving instructor or a male driving instructor, and we will try hard to arrange it. If you are torn between gearboxes, read our guide on choosing a manual or automatic licence, and see what other pupils say on our reviews page.

Yes. We collect learners from home anywhere in the village, from the newer streets in the east to the roads around High Street and Church Road. We can also pick you up from Kirk Sandall station, from work on the industrial estate or from school or college if that suits you better.
It is a short drive. The test centre at Shaw Wood Business Park sits just off Thorne Road beside Sandall Park, and the drive there takes you along Station Road and through Kirk Sandall. That means test-area practice fits easily into a normal lesson.
Yes. The bascule bridge on Madam Lane and the level crossings on Stainforth Road and Bramwith Road are useful teaching points. You learn to read the signs early and stop in the right place. Then you wait calmly and move off smoothly once the way is clear, which helps on test.
No. You only need a provisional licence to start. You must pass the theory test before you can book the practical test, so most pupils revise while they learn. Our tips on how to pass the theory test first time cover the questions and the hazard perception clips.
