Hold a full licence but have not driven for a while? Refresher lessons in Stainforth start from wherever your confidence is now. We look at what has changed on the roads around DN7 and plan lessons around the drives you actually need to make.
There is no test at the end unless you want one. Our main refresher driving lessons page explains the general approach, and this page covers what returning drivers meet locally.
If you last drove here while Hatfield Main Colliery was working, the eastern side of town will look different. The pit closed in 2015, and Unity Way opened in December 2020 as a 2.4 km link road from Waggons Way to Junction 5 of the M18. The Stainforth Town Deal has also funded the East Lane Gateway scheme to connect East Lane with the Unity Way roundabout.
The rules have moved on too. The Highway Code was updated in 2022 with a new hierarchy of road users that gives people on foot and on bikes more priority at junctions. A refresher lesson is a good moment to go through those changes on real roads. You can read the current version of the Highway Code on GOV.UK before you start.
Silver Street is a good test of rusty observation. Water Lane and Thorne Road both meet it, and Water Lane leads to Stainforth Bridge, a listed two-arch stone bridge over the River Don built in 1768. It was closed for repairs in the past after a vehicle hit one of its walls, so judging your position and giving way sensibly matters there.
Church Road at its junctions with Field Road and Doncaster Road is the other spot many returning drivers find busy, especially around the school run near Long Toft Primary School. Further out, the A18 through Hatfield and Dunsville carries much heavier traffic than anything in Stainforth itself. In Hatfield it becomes Manor Road and then High Street. Bus stops and side roads line both, which makes the road a good step up once local junctions feel easy again.
For many returning drivers the motorway is the real worry. From Stainforth, Unity Way brings you straight to Junction 5 of the M18, where the M180 starts and the Doncaster North services sit. A typical first motorway session joins there, runs to Junction 6 for Thorne on the A614 and comes back to Stainforth along Kirton Lane.
Later sessions can head south to Junction 4 for the A630 on the Armthorpe side of Doncaster. Your instructor can coach slip-road joining and lane discipline as well as leaving at the right exit, with the dual controls there as a backup. See motorway lessons and Pass Plus for more.
The first session starts with a chat about what you want from it, then a short drive so your instructor can see where you are. After that the lessons are yours to shape, whether that means the school run, the drive to work or a weekly supermarket trip. If you would feel more comfortable with a woman beside you, ask for a female driving instructor.
Drivers from the next town along often book the same way; see refresher driving lessons in Thorne or refresher lessons in Hatfield. Our Stainforth driving lessons page covers pick-up points across the town.

Many returning drivers know after one or two lessons how much more they want. Some only need a couple of sessions to get used to the roads again, while others book a block to rebuild confidence on the A18 and the M18. There is no minimum, and you can stop whenever you feel ready to drive alone.
Yes. From Stainforth, Unity Way gives easy access to Junction 5 of the M18, so a motorway section fits well into a refresher lesson. Your instructor will usually check you are comfortable on the A18 first, then plan a short motorway run with a simple exit such as Junction 6 for Thorne.
Yes. Alma has automatic cars and instructors who teach automatic, so you can get used to creep and kickdown before driving your own car. Many drivers find that a couple of hours on local roads such as Church Road and the A18 is enough to feel at home with the new gearbox.
