Motability Scheme lessons in Stainforth

Alma teaches disabled learners and Motability Scheme customers in Stainforth using automatic, dual controlled cars. Tell us about any adaptation needs when you call, and we will go over pick-up arrangements and lesson length before you start. We can also explain how funding and assessments work.

Pick-up that works for you

Most Motability pupils are collected from home, which removes the need to travel anywhere first. Stainforth's level streets make it easier to find a flat, safe spot outside your house to get in and out of the car. If you use a wheelchair or walking aid, mention it when you book so we can check how it will travel with you.

Another option is Hatfield and Stainforth station. Its fully accessible footbridge links both platforms to the entrance and car park, so you could arrive by train from Doncaster. The station is unstaffed, so let us know if you need help on arrival and we will plan the meeting point together.

Automatic cars and adaptations

Our Motability lessons use automatic, dual controlled cars, which removes the clutch and gear lever and suits many physical conditions. Tell us about any adaptation needs when you call so we can be honest about what we can offer.

If you are unsure what controls or adaptations you need, Driving Mobility, a national charity, runs car driving and adaptation assessments. It has a Doncaster outreach centre, with appointments arranged through its Leeds centre. Find out more at drivingmobility.org.uk.

Starting at 16 with PIP

Most people can apply for a provisional licence from 15 years and 9 months and drive from 17. If you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP, you can start driving a car at 16. Apply for your licence on GOV.UK, and tell DVLA about any medical condition that affects driving.

The Motability Foundation driving lessons grant

The Motability Foundation can fund up to 40 hours of driving lessons for disabled people on the Motability Scheme who meet extra criteria, including receiving a means-tested benefit, and who have already passed their theory test. The Foundation arranges grant-funded lessons itself, so check your eligibility with them first on 0800 500 3186 or at motabilityfoundation.org.uk.

If you are not eligible, or you want to start sooner, you can learn with Alma as a private pupil. Lesson costs are on our prices page.

Getting the theory test done early

Because the grant is only open to people who have already passed their theory test, it is worth revising early. The multiple-choice part has 50 questions with a pass mark of 43, and the hazard perception part has 14 video clips with a pass mark of 44 out of 75.

When you book your theory test on GOV.UK you can ask for support, such as extra time for the questions if you have a reading difficulty. Doncaster's theory test centre is at Fraser House on Netherhall Road. A pass stays valid for two years, which gives you time to arrange funding and lessons.

Lessons on Stainforth roads

Lessons follow the same progression as any learner's, at a pace that suits your energy and comfort. You start on quiet streets such as Holme Gardens and Ellesmere Grove, then move to Church Road and Emerson Avenue. Later lessons take in Station Road and Kirton Lane before the A18. Breaks are built in whenever you need them. If pain or fatigue means a shorter session works better, let us know so we can plan around it.

Our main Motability driving lessons page explains more about how we work. Pupils over the railway in Hatfield can read about Motability lessons in Hatfield, and our Stainforth driving lessons page lists every lesson type available here.

Motability Scheme driving lessons in Stainforth: your questions

Does Alma provide lessons funded by the Motability Foundation grant?

No. The Motability Foundation arranges grant-funded lessons itself. To find out if you qualify, call the Foundation on 0800 500 3186. If you are not eligible, or you would like to start sooner, you can book lessons with Alma as a private pupil in one of our automatic cars.

Can I learn to drive at 16 in Stainforth?

You can if you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP. Apply for your provisional licence first. Once it arrives, we can pick you up from home in Stainforth and start lessons on quiet residential streets nearby.

Do I need a driving assessment before lessons?

Not always. If you know your needs and an automatic car suits you, you can start straight away. If you are unsure about adaptations, Driving Mobility can arrange an assessment at its Doncaster outreach centre through its Leeds centre. We are happy to talk it through on 07402 034084 first.
