Motability Scheme lessons in Hatfield

Alma Driving School teaches disabled learners and Motability Scheme customers in Hatfield, using automatic, dual controlled cars. Lessons start from your door, and we plan everything around what you need. Tell us about any adaptation needs when you first call so we can talk through the options honestly.

Learning to drive with a disability around Hatfield

Hatfield is a good place to learn if you have a disability that affects how you drive. The town is flat, so there are few steep hills to manage, and the residential streets off Station Road and Crookes Broom Lane give you space to build up control without heavy traffic. When you are ready, the A18 through Manor Road and High Street adds buses and junctions, and the open roads towards Hatfield Woodhouse bring higher speeds.

All our Motability lessons are in automatic cars. Without a clutch or gear lever, you can concentrate on steering and observation, which can help if you have limited movement in your left leg. Every car has dual controls, and our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs).

Starting at 16 if you receive PIP

Most people have to wait until their 17th birthday to drive a car. The exception is anyone receiving the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or waiting on an application for it, who can start at 16. Provisional licence applications open at 15 years and 9 months, and you can apply for a provisional licence on GOV.UK.

That extra year can matter a great deal to a teenager in Hatfield who relies on lifts or the 388 bus. Being able to drive by the time you leave school opens up college courses and jobs across Doncaster that would otherwise be hard to reach.

Help with lesson costs from the Motability Foundation

Some learners on the Motability Scheme can get help with the cost of lessons. The Motability Foundation runs a driving lessons grant that pays for as many as 40 hours of tuition, though only for people who meet extra conditions. One of those is receiving a means-tested benefit. Another is having your theory test already passed.

The Foundation books grant-funded lessons through its own arrangements, so ring them on 0800 500 3186 to find out where you stand before you contact any driving school. Their driving lessons grant page sets out the full criteria. Should the answer be no, or should you want to get going while you wait, Alma can teach you as a private pupil from your home in Hatfield.

Working out what adaptations you need

Hand controls or a steering ball? If you have no idea what set-up would suit you, a professional assessment is worth doing before you buy or adapt a car. The charity Driving Mobility holds car driving and adaptation assessments at an outreach centre in Doncaster, booked through its centre in Leeds.

Bring the assessor's recommendations along when you first speak to us. Knowing what they found means we can be clear with you about what our cars can and cannot offer, and plan lessons from there.

Accessible pick-ups in Hatfield

Door-to-door pick-up is standard, so most learners start each lesson from home. Coming by train? Hatfield and Stainforth station has a fully accessible footbridge linking the platforms with the entrance and car park, which can make it a practical meeting point. We can also collect you from work or college as long as there is somewhere safe to swap seats.

Learners further out in Hatfield Woodhouse or near Lindholme off the A614 are covered too. Just let us know your address when you call, along with anything that makes getting in and out of a car easier for you.

Motability Scheme driving lessons in Hatfield: your questions

Will Alma book my Motability Foundation grant lessons for me?

No. Grant-funded lessons are organised by the Motability Foundation, so speak to them first on 0800 500 3186 about whether you qualify. Learners who do not qualify, or who want to begin straight away, can book with us privately and learn in an automatic car with dual controls.

Can I start driving at 16 in Hatfield?

It is possible. Anyone receiving the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component, or waiting on an application for it, can drive a car from 16. The provisional licence application can go in at 15 years and 9 months. For everyone else the starting age is 17.

Do your cars have adaptations?

Our cars are automatic with dual controls. If you think you need adaptations, mention it on your first call. A Driving Mobility assessment at its Doncaster outreach centre will tell you what set-up suits you, and we can then be honest about whether we can help.

Can you pick me up from Hatfield Woodhouse or Lindholme?

Yes. We cover the whole of Hatfield parish, including Hatfield Woodhouse, Lindholme, Dunsville and Dunscroft. Door-to-door pick-up means you do not need to travel to a meeting point, and we can agree the safest place to swap seats outside your home.
