Alma Driving School teaches learner drivers all over Hatfield, from the older streets around High Street and Manor Road to the estates off Station Road and Crookes Broom Lane. We collect you from your home or workplace and build your driving on roads you already know.
Hatfield is a town in the DN7 postcode district, about seven miles north-east of Doncaster city centre. It sits on the western edge of Hatfield Chase, the low, flat farmland that Cornelius Vermuyden drained in the 1600s. The wider parish takes in Dunscroft, Dunsville, Hatfield Woodhouse and Lindholme, so one lesson can move from a village street to a main road and out into open country without a long drive in between.
The flat ground shapes how we teach here. There are very few natural hills, so the slopes you practise on are mostly bridges: the A18 rising over the M18 on the eastern side of town, and Station Road climbing over the railway near Hatfield and Stainforth station. Both are useful for hill starts and for holding the car steady at the biting point when traffic stops on an incline.
Hatfield also has unusually good motorway access for a small town. Junctions 4 and 5 of the M18 lie inside the parish, the M180 begins at Junction 5 beside Doncaster North services, and Unity Way, a 2.4 km link road opened in December 2020, now runs from Junction 5 to Waggons Way by the old Hatfield Colliery.
First lessons usually begin on housing estate roads where there is room to stop and try again. The side roads where Millard Avenue and Millcroft Crescent meet Crookes Broom Lane work well, as do the streets around Westfield Road and Hund Oak Drive off Station Road. You learn the cockpit drill, moving off with mirrors and a signal, and pulling up neatly at the kerb.
Next come Manor Road and High Street, which carry the A18 through the middle of Hatfield. Both are conservation areas, with old buildings close to the pavement, the Church Walk junction by St Lawrence's Church and bus stops where the 388 pulls in. This is where anticipation starts to matter: waiting patiently behind a bus, judging gaps at Old Thorne Road and Carr Side Lane, and keeping your speed down past the shops.
When junctions feel steady, lessons head east along Epworth Road towards the A1146 and the A614, then over to Tudworth Roundabout close to the M180. These roads bring higher speeds and long bends across open land, plus slow tractors you need to plan around. Since June 2018 learners can drive on the motorway with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car, and from Hatfield the M18 is only minutes away.
Most learners are collected from home, but we can meet you wherever suits the day. Common pick-ups in and around Hatfield include:
If you live further out, in Hatfield Woodhouse off Main Street or near Lindholme on the A614, tell us when you book and we will plan the lesson to start from your door.
Practical tests for Hatfield learners are taken at Doncaster driving test centre. Its address is Unit 10 & 11 Heather Court, Shaw Wood Business Park, Shaw Wood Way, DN2 5YL, on the Armthorpe side of the city. From Hatfield High Street it is roughly four and a half miles in a straight line, and a little further by road.
The usual way there follows the A18 west along Manor Road and on through Dunsville, where the road becomes Doncaster Road and then High Street. After that it is Thorne Road through Edenthorpe towards Wheatley Hills. Once motorway lessons have been covered, the M18 from Junction 5 to Junction 4 is another option. As you get closer to test standard we spend lessons on the kind of junctions and roundabouts you will meet around the test centre, so the area feels familiar on the day. Our guide to the Doncaster driving test explains the eyesight check and the show me tell me questions, along with independent driving and the reversing exercise.
Every course is planned around you, and each type has a page explaining how it works on Hatfield's roads:

The test centre at Shaw Wood Business Park is about four and a half miles from Hatfield High Street as the crow flies, and a little more by road. Most lessons reach it along the A18 through Dunsville and Edenthorpe, and we practise on similar roads well before your test date.
Yes. We pick up across the whole parish, including Hatfield Woodhouse, Lindholme, Dunsville and Dunscroft. Rural addresses near the A614 are fine, and the open roads across Hatfield Chase are useful practice for country driving.
Yes, once your instructor feels you are ready. Learner drivers can use the motorway with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car, and Junction 5 of the M18 is close to Hatfield. See our motorway lessons page for more detail.
We can collect you from home or work, wherever you are in DN7 or Doncaster. Many learners book lessons straight after classes finish, so it helps to let us know your timetable when you call 07402 034084 or send a WhatsApp message.
No. A provisional licence is all you need for your first lesson. The theory test has to be passed before a practical test can be booked, so most Hatfield learners revise for it in the weeks they are having lessons. Our guide on how to pass the theory test first time has tips.
