Mock driving test in Hatfield

Think of a mock driving test as a practice run with the pressure turned up. For Hatfield learners it starts at home, follows the A18 towards Doncaster and finishes with a written debrief you keep, so you know exactly what to work on before test day.

What the mock test involves

Allow roughly two hours once the debrief is included. During the drive your instructor gives directions in examiner style, says very little else and fills in the DVSA marking sheet as you go. The real practical test it copies runs for around 40 minutes and contains these parts:

  • Reading a car number plate at 20 metres for the eyesight check.
  • A tell me question while parked, then a show me question once you are moving.
  • A spell of independent driving, about 20 minutes long, where you follow either the sat nav or the road signs.
  • A single reversing exercise. It could be parallel parking or bay parking, or you may be asked to pull up on the right and reverse about two car lengths.
  • On some tests, an emergency stop.

Treating it seriously is the point. The silence in the car and the sight of your instructor writing notes feel strange the first time, and it is far better to meet that feeling on a mock in Hatfield than on the morning of your test.

The drive from Hatfield towards the test centre

Doncaster driving test centre is at Shaw Wood Business Park, DN2 5YL, on the Armthorpe side of the city and roughly four and a half miles from Hatfield in a straight line. A mock from Hatfield usually heads west on the A18 along Manor Road, through Dunsville on Doncaster Road and High Street, then on to Thorne Road through Edenthorpe.

The Sandall Park and Shaw Lane roundabouts on the way into Doncaster are good tests of lane discipline. Once nearer the test centre, we use the kind of junctions and roundabouts you will meet around it. DVSA does not publish test routes, so the aim is for every type of road and junction to feel familiar.

Reading your debrief

Afterwards your instructor goes through the marking sheet with you line by line. Minor errors are recorded as driving faults. Anything potentially dangerous is a serious fault, and a dangerous fault means actual danger to you or someone else. A pass on the real test allows up to 15 driving faults, provided there are no serious or dangerous ones at all.

You take away a written debrief listing what went well and what cost you marks. It might pick up a missed mirror check before changing speed on Epworth Road, or hesitation when a bus pulls out on High Street. Whatever it shows, it is specific to your driving.

When to book a mock test

The best time is usually the last few weeks before your test, leaving time to fix anything the debrief shows up. A mock is also useful if you have failed before and want to see whether the old faults have gone, or near the end of an intensive driving course in Hatfield.

Mock driving tests in Hatfield: your questions

How close is a mock to the real Doncaster test?

Very close. The format matches the practical test and the marking uses the DVSA sheet, though a mock lasts longer because of the debrief. During the drive your instructor plays the examiner, then switches back to teaching once you stop to explain each mark.

Is my instructor allowed in the car on test day?

They are, as long as you ask for it. Your instructor sits in the back and cannot help during the drive. Having them there means they see exactly what happened, which makes the conversation afterwards far more useful whatever the result.

What if I do badly on the mock?

Then the mock has done its job. The debrief shows you exactly what to fix. If there is a lot to work on, your instructor may suggest a few more lessons before the real test, or moving the test date if needed.

Can I book a mock test if I learned with another school?

Yes. Learners who trained elsewhere are welcome to book a mock for a fresh pair of eyes. We pick you up from home in Hatfield, run a full test-style drive and give you the same written debrief our own pupils receive.
