Mock driving test in Dunscroft

A mock test answers the question every learner asks near the end: am I ready? Starting from your home in Dunscroft, your instructor runs a drive that follows the format of the real practical test, marks it the way an examiner would and then explains every mark.

How a Dunscroft mock test unfolds

The whole session takes about two hours, debrief included. A typical mock from Dunscroft might run in this order:

  1. Eyesight check. On a side street near your home, you read a number plate from 20 metres.
  2. Tell me question. Before you set off, you explain how you would carry out a safety check on the car.
  3. Into traffic. You drive down Broadway, emerge onto Doncaster Road at Dunsville and head west along the A18, with a show me question asked while you are on the move.
  4. Independent driving. For about 20 minutes you follow a sat nav or road signs, as you would on the day, perhaps through Edenthorpe towards Wheatley Hills.
  5. Reversing exercise. You complete one of the test manoeuvres. It could be parallel parking or a bay park, or pulling up on the right and reversing about two car lengths.
  6. Emergency stop. Some tests include one, so your mock might too, on a suitable quiet road.

Throughout the drive your instructor gives directions and very little else, marking you on the DVSA sheet exactly as an examiner would.

Driving towards the test centre

Doncaster driving test centre is at Shaw Wood Business Park, DN2 5YL, on the Armthorpe side of the city and just under four miles from Dunscroft in a straight line. The DVSA does not publish test routes, so a mock does not try to copy one. It takes you onto the kind of roads and roundabouts you will meet around the test centre, so nothing on the day feels unfamiliar.

The A18 through Dunsville and Edenthorpe is a good test of planning and lane discipline as the traffic builds towards Doncaster. Your instructor may also bring the drive back through Station Road and over the railway bridge, which checks your control on an incline.

The debrief: what your marks mean

Once you stop, your instructor goes through the sheet with you. Minor errors are marked as driving faults. A serious fault is one that could have been dangerous, and a dangerous fault involves real danger. On the real test you can have up to 15 driving faults and still pass, as long as there are no serious or dangerous faults.

You keep a written debrief that sets out your strengths alongside the faults that cost you. A hesitant emerge at the Broadway junction or a late mirror check on Doncaster Road might feature, and your remaining lessons can then target exactly those points.

Who should book one

A mock is most useful for learners with a practical test in the next few weeks, because there is still time to work on whatever it shows. It is also valuable if you have failed before and want to know whether the same faults are still there. Learners finishing an intensive driving course in Dunscroft can fit one in near the end.

Mock driving tests in Dunscroft: your questions

How long does a mock driving test take?

Allow about two hours. The test-style drive itself mirrors the real practical test, which lasts around 40 minutes, and the rest of the time goes on the debrief and any extra practice your instructor thinks will help.

Will the mock follow the real Doncaster test route?

There is no official route to follow, because DVSA does not publish test routes. Instead the mock uses roads and junctions similar to those around the test centre, along with the A18 from Dunscroft, so the type of driving is familiar.

Can I take a mock test in an automatic car?

Yes. We run mock tests in both manual and automatic cars. Take it in the same type of car you will use for your real test, so the reversing exercise and controls feel exactly the same on the day.

Can my instructor come with me on the real test?

Yes, if you ask. Your instructor can sit in the back of the car during your practical test. They will not help you, but they will see exactly what happened and can talk it through with you afterwards.
