Manual driving lessons in Dunscroft

Learning in a manual car means your licence covers every type of car on the road. In Dunscroft the clutch gets a proper workout, from crawling behind buses on Broadway to pulling away on the railway bridge, and by test day changing gear should feel second nature.

Clutch control in Broadway's traffic

Broadway is the backbone of Dunscroft, and it is where most manual learners first discover how much the clutch does at low speed. Buses on the 387 and 387A stop along it near Ingram Road, The Nook, Craven Road and Norwood Road. Like most residential through roads it often has cars parked outside houses, so you regularly need to give way to oncoming traffic before creeping forward again.

Each of those moments is clutch practice. You learn to hold the car at the biting point with a touch of gas, let it inch forward without stalling and then pick up second gear as the road clears. After a few lessons the sequence becomes automatic, and that frees your attention for mirrors and the road ahead.

The Station Road railway bridge

Dunscroft is flat almost everywhere, with one useful exception. Station Road climbs over the railway beside Hatfield and Stainforth station, and that short incline is the best local place to learn hill control in a manual car.

  1. On the approach you check your mirrors and select a lower gear in good time so the engine does not labour.
  2. If traffic stops on the slope, hold the car on the footbrake, then apply the handbrake.
  3. To move off, find the biting point, add a little more gas than usual and feel the car pull against the brake.
  4. Release the handbrake smoothly and the car moves forward without rolling back.

We also look for a safe slope to pull in on, because you could be asked to stop and move off again on test. Practising on the bridge approach means a gradient on the day holds no surprises.

Emerging onto the A18 at Dunsville

The southern end of Broadway meets Doncaster Road, the A18, at Dunsville. Joining a main road from a side road is one of the bigger steps in a manual course, because so much happens at once. While you look both ways you also hold the car at the biting point in first gear. Then you move into the gap promptly and change up as you gather speed.

Once you are on the A18, the road runs west as High Street through Dunsville and Thorne Road through Edenthorpe. That stretch is good for smooth changes up through the gearbox, and for working back down as you approach bus stops and junctions. The 388 bus also uses Doncaster Road past Coppice Avenue and Danum Road, so watch for it pulling out.

Higher gears on Unity Way

North of the village, Unity Way links Waggons Way in Stainforth with Junction 5 of the M18. The 2.4 km road opened at the end of 2020 to open up land for the Unity development, and junctions have already been built along it for future building. For a manual learner it is a chance to settle into fourth and fifth, then plan a block change down, for example from fifth to third, as you come up to a junction.

When you are ready, Junction 5 leads on to the M18. Learners can drive on the motorway with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car, and our motorway lessons page explains how we introduce it.

Manual driving lessons in Dunscroft: your questions

Is Dunscroft hilly enough to practise hill starts?

Not naturally, which is why we use the railway bridge on Station Road. It gives you a genuine incline to move off on, and your instructor can find other safe slopes nearby. That is enough to make sure a gradient on test feels familiar.

What is the hardest part of learning manual around Dunscroft?

For most learners it is slow-speed clutch control on Broadway. Buses and parked cars there mean frequent stops. It feels tricky for a few lessons, then suddenly clicks. Emerging onto the A18 at Dunsville is the other big step.

Does a manual licence let me drive automatics too?

Yes. Pass in a manual car and your full licence covers both manual and automatic cars. An automatic pass only covers automatics, which is why many learners who might drive a work van or an older family car choose manual.

Can I have a manual lesson that includes Unity Way and the M18?

Yes, once your instructor thinks you are ready. Unity Way is a good bridge between village streets and faster roads, and from Junction 5 you can join the M18 with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car.
