Driving lessons in Dunscroft

Alma Driving School gives driving lessons across Dunscroft, from the long run of Broadway down to the shops on Station Road and the streets near Hatfield and Stainforth station. Your instructor collects you at your front door and starts on roads you walk along every day.

Dunscroft at a glance for a learner driver

Dunscroft is a village in the DN7 postcode district, about six miles north-east of Doncaster city centre. It sits within Hatfield parish, with Hatfield itself to the east, Dunsville to the south on the A18 and Stainforth just north of the railway line. Old records describe it as a small hamlet that once had a cell belonging to Roche Abbey, and a building known as Dunscroft Grange stood here until it was demolished in the 1960s.

Most of today's Dunscroft is housing laid out either side of two main spines. Broadway runs north from Doncaster Road at the Dunsville end, and Station Road crosses the village between Hatfield and the station. Between them sit many residential streets such as Ingram Road and Craven Road off Broadway, or Cherry Tree Drive and The Crescent off Station Road. They give a new driver plenty of space to practise before meeting busier traffic.

The roads you will work through

Estate streets first

Early lessons stay on the side roads off Broadway, such as Norwood Road, St Lawrence Road, The Nook and Broadwater Drive. Here you learn moving off, stopping at the kerb and turning into junctions where the traffic is light and you can take your time.

Broadway and Station Road

Next you drive the two spines themselves. Broadway carries the 387 and 387A buses between Doncaster and Stainforth, so you practise passing parked cars, waiting behind buses at stops and judging gaps at each side road. Station Road brings the shops around the Abbey Shopping Centre, pedestrians crossing between them and the climb over the railway bridge by the station.

Out to the A18 and Unity Way

When those feel comfortable, lessons head south to Doncaster Road, the A18, where you emerge onto a main road and build speed towards Dunsville and Edenthorpe. North of the village, Unity Way runs from Waggons Way in Stainforth to Junction 5 of the M18. It opened in December 2020, and a drive along it is a useful step up before any motorway lessons.

Landmarks and pick-up points

We pick up from home as standard, though some learners prefer to meet somewhere easy to find. Useful spots in and around Dunscroft include:

  • The Abbey Shopping Centre on Station Road, home to a Co-op
  • Hatfield and Stainforth station, served by Northern trains on the lines from Doncaster towards Hull and Scunthorpe
  • Sheep Dip Lane Academy on Sheep Dip Lane, for parents who want a lesson after the morning drop-off
  • Ash Hill Academy on Ash Hill Road, which sits between the two villages of Dunscroft and Hatfield
  • Your workplace, or a college in Doncaster if you study there

Living close to the railway on the Stainforth side? We cover that too, and our page on driving lessons in Stainforth explains the roads north of the tracks.

Getting from Dunscroft to the test centre

The Doncaster practical driving test centre is at Unit 10 & 11 Heather Court, Shaw Wood Business Park, Shaw Wood Way, DN2 5YL, on the Armthorpe side of the city. As the crow flies it is just under four miles from Station Road in Dunscroft.

The most direct drive leaves the village down Broadway to the A18 at Dunsville, follows High Street through Dunsville and continues along Thorne Road through Edenthorpe towards Wheatley Hills. Once you have had motorway lessons there is a second way across that follows Unity Way to the M18, then the motorway from Junction 5 to Junction 4. Nearer your test we practise on the kind of roundabouts and junctions you will meet around the test centre. Our guide to what to expect on the Doncaster driving test covers the day itself.

Questions from Dunscroft learners

How far is Dunscroft from Doncaster driving test centre?

Shaw Wood Business Park is just under four miles from Dunscroft in a straight line, a little more by road. Most learners get there down Broadway to the A18 before heading through Dunsville and Edenthorpe. We practise on similar roads and junctions long before your test date.

Will my lessons use the railway bridge on Station Road?

Yes, once you are ready. The bridge over the railway by Hatfield and Stainforth station is one of the few real slopes in the area, so it is useful for hill starts and gear control. Early lessons stay on flatter side streets.

Can I get to my theory test by bus from Dunscroft?

Yes. The 387 and 387A run along Broadway to Doncaster Frenchgate Interchange, and the theory test centre is at Fraser House on Netherhall Road in Doncaster. Book your test on GOV.UK and leave plenty of time to get there.

Do you cover Stainforth and Dunsville as well?

We do. Learners from Stainforth, Dunsville, Hatfield and Hatfield Woodhouse all get the same door-to-door pick-up. Many lessons cross between these villages anyway, because the roads that link them are useful practice.
