Alma Driving School teaches learner drivers across Stainforth, the former pit town in the DN7 postcode on the north-east side of Doncaster. We pick you up from home or work and take you from quiet residential streets to the A18 and the kind of roads found around the Doncaster driving test centre.
Stainforth sits about seven miles north-east of Doncaster city centre, in the DN7 postcode district it shares with Hatfield and Dunscroft. The railway that serves Hatfield and Stainforth station runs between the town and Dunscroft. The Stainforth and Keadby Canal passes to the north. Beyond the canal and the River Don lies Fishlake, and to the west Doncaster Road leads through South Bramwith towards Barnby Dun.
The town grew up around Hatfield Main Colliery, which closed in 2015. Its listed twin winding towers still stand on the old pit site off Waggons Way, and you can see them from the M18. For a learner that history means two very different kinds of road close together: the established residential streets around Church Road and Silver Street, and the newer link roads built across the colliery land to reach the motorway. With roughly seven thousand residents, the town has lighter traffic than Doncaster itself, which makes it a sensible place to learn the basics.
Lessons start wherever suits you. We collect learners from home or work and bring them back afterwards, and students can be picked up from school or college. Places Stainforth learners often ask for include:
Most learners start on residential roads such as Princess Avenue, Kingsway, Holme Gardens and Ellesmere Grove. At low speed you can practise moving off, pulling up at the kerb and passing parked cars without feeling rushed by traffic behind.
Next come the junctions that carry Stainforth's buses: Church Road where it meets Field Road and Doncaster Road; Emerson Avenue and East Lane; and Silver Street where Water Lane and Thorne Road join. Several bus services use these streets, so you get used to buses pulling away from stops and to planning your road position early.
Once junctions feel routine, lessons head out of town. Station Road takes you over the railway to Dunscroft and onto Broadway. Kirton Lane runs north-east into Thorne, and Doncaster Road heads west through South Bramwith to Barnby Dun, where there is a railway level crossing on Stainforth Road. Each one adds higher speeds and new hazards to read.
The last stage covers the A18 through Dunsville and Edenthorpe towards the Armthorpe side of Doncaster and, if you want it, Unity Way. That 2.4 km link road opened in December 2020 and runs from Waggons Way to Junction 5 of the M18, so it is a short hop to a motorway lesson once you are ready.
Doncaster's practical driving test centre is at Unit 10 and 11 Heather Court, Shaw Wood Business Park, DN2 5YL, roughly three miles from the city centre on the Armthorpe side. From Stainforth that is about four and a half miles in a straight line, and a little further by road.
The natural way in follows the 387 bus. Station Road takes you into Dunscroft. From there Broadway and High Street carry you through Dunsville before Thorne Road, the A18, runs through Edenthorpe. Driving that approach a few times means the faster traffic and larger junctions near Edenthorpe feel familiar long before test day.
DVSA does not publish test routes, so nobody can promise which roads your test will cover. What we can do is make sure you have driven the kind of roads found around the test centre. Our guide to the Doncaster driving test explains what happens on the day.
Your theory test is taken at Fraser House on Netherhall Road in Doncaster. Trains from Hatfield and Stainforth station to Doncaster make that an easy trip on your own.
Every Alma lesson type is available in Stainforth. Here is why each one suits the area:
Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs), and every car has dual controls and full insurance. You can ask for a female driving instructor or a male driving instructor when you book. Loredana, one of our two co-founders, is known for helping nervous learners, while Diana teaches automatic only and works well around busy family timetables.
Alma is a family-run school set up in Doncaster in 2022 by Loredana and Alexandru, with its registered office in Armthorpe. Before you book you can read what pupils say on our reviews page and check lesson prices and block booking packages. Then call 07402 034084 or send us a WhatsApp message.
We'll ring you back within the day. If it's urgent, call 07402 034084.
Leave your name and number and we'll ring you back within the day to talk through lessons in Stainforth and the times that suit you.
Stainforth is in the DN7 postcode district, with Doncaster as its post town. Hatfield and Dunscroft share the same district, so if your address is anywhere in that part of DN7 we can pick you up from home. Nearby Barnby Dun and Thorne are covered as well, so you can also start lessons from a friend's or relative's house there.
The Doncaster test centre on Shaw Wood Business Park is about four and a half miles from Stainforth as the crow flies, on the Armthorpe side of the city. Most of the drive follows Station Road and Broadway in Dunscroft before joining the A18 through Dunsville and Edenthorpe, so you will know the approach well by the time you take your test.
Yes. Since June 2018 learner drivers can have motorway lessons with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car. From Stainforth, Unity Way gives quick access to Junction 5 of the M18. Your instructor will only suggest it once you are confident on faster roads like the A18. See our motorway lessons page.
A manual pass lets you drive both types of car, while an automatic pass gives an automatic-only licence but usually needs fewer hours. Stainforth's level roads suit beginners in either. Our manual or automatic guide sets out the pros and cons, and you can always try an automatic lesson first before deciding.
Manual or automatic, from £60 for 1.5 hours, picked up from your door.
