Intensive driving courses in Hatfield

An intensive course packs your driving lessons into days or weeks instead of months. It starts with a free assessment drive from your home in Hatfield. After that we set the course length and give you a price, and the practical test is booked as part of the course.

Starting with a free assessment drive

Before anything is booked, an instructor collects you from home and takes you for an assessment drive. If you have never driven, this happens on quiet residential roads off Station Road. If you have had lessons before, expect to drive further, perhaps along Manor Road and High Street through the A18 village centre, so the instructor can see how you handle the buses and junctions.

From that drive we work out roughly how many hours you are likely to need to reach test standard. That sets the length of your course, and we price it once the assessment is done. Nobody can say for certain how quickly a person will learn, so the plan is honest about what is realistic for you.

You need a theory test pass before you can take the practical test. If you have not passed yet, book it straight away on GOV.UK so the dates line up with your course.

What a day on an intensive course might look like

Every day is different, but a typical day for a Hatfield learner part way through a course might run like this:

  1. Morning: warm up on the estate roads around Crookes Broom Lane, then work on a reversing exercise such as parallel parking behind a parked car or pulling up on the right.
  2. Late morning: the A18 through Hatfield, with its bus stops and side roads, then Station Road over the railway bridge for some practice on an incline.
  3. Break: time to rest and talk through what went well, because concentration drops if you drive for too long without stopping.
  4. Afternoon: west along Doncaster Road through Dunsville and Thorne Road through Edenthorpe, then the Sandall Park and Shaw Lane roundabouts on the way into Doncaster.
  5. End of day: independent driving back to Hatfield following a sat nav, just as you would on test.

Later in the course the focus moves towards the Armthorpe side of the city, where you practise on the kind of junctions you will meet around the test centre at Shaw Wood Business Park.

Who an intensive course suits in Hatfield

Intensive courses work best for learners who can commit several hours a day. In Hatfield that often means students home from college or university over the summer, or shift workers who can block out a run of days off. It can also suit someone who has a job offer that depends on a licence, or anyone who has had lessons before and wants to finish quickly.

If you have a busy week ahead with work or family, weekly lessons may be the better fit. There is no wrong answer, and we will tell you honestly after the assessment drive.

Getting the most from a short course

Sleep and food matter more than people expect. Several hours of driving in a day is tiring. Arrive rested and take the breaks when they come. Use the evenings to revise the Highway Code and go over your instructor's notes on the day.

It is worth booking a mock driving test in Hatfield close to the end. It shows you exactly where you stand under test conditions and gives you a written debrief to work from in the final lessons.

Intensive driving courses in Hatfield: your questions

How long is an intensive driving course in Hatfield?

It depends on your assessment drive. A complete beginner needs more hours than someone who has already had lessons. We set the course length once we have seen you drive, and we book your practical test as part of the course so the two fit together.

Can I do an intensive course in an automatic car?

Yes. We teach intensive courses in both manual and automatic cars. Automatic courses can be shorter for some learners because there is less to coordinate, though your assessment drive is still the best guide to how many hours you will need.

Do I need to pass my theory test before starting?

You can start the course before passing, but you must pass the theory test before the practical test. In practice it is much easier if you have passed it, or at least booked it, before the course begins, so your test date is not held up.

What happens if I do not pass at the end of the course?

It happens, and it is not the end of the world. Your instructor will go through the result with you, and we can talk about a few extra lessons and a new test date. The test report shows exactly which faults to work on next time.
