Learning in a manual car gives you a licence for both manual and automatic cars. In Armthorpe the build-up has a natural order: the crescents first and the village centre next. Doncaster Road and the faster roads beyond the Leger Way roundabout come last.
The crescents built when Markham Main was working are good places to meet the clutch for the first time. On streets like Charles Crescent or Paxton Crescent, a few yards off Doncaster Road, you can pull away and stop again and again without a bus on your tail.
Your instructor will explain the biting point, the moment the clutch plates start to meet and the bonnet lifts slightly. You will learn to hold it there, check your blind spot and release the parking brake as you add a little gas. The curve of a crescent also teaches steering at low speed, which is harder than it looks.
Church Street and Mere Lane bring the first real test of clutch control in traffic. Stopping behind a 381 or 382 bus at a stop, then moving off again when the road clears, needs a smooth hand on the clutch and a good look over your shoulder.
Parked cars on both sides mean you will practise holding back to give way, which often means creeping forward in first gear with the clutch slipping. Around the three schools on Mere Lane, timing matters. We may plan these lessons for outside the school run at first, then come back at busier times once you are ready.
Junctions from side roads onto Hatfield Lane or Tranmoor Lane are good practice for emerging, when you need to choose first gear, find the biting point early and be ready to go as soon as the gap appears.
Doncaster Road is where gear changes start to flow. Heading west, it becomes Armthorpe Road as it passes Castle Park on the way to the Leger Way roundabout. Along that stretch you will move up through the gears, then plan your approach to the roundabout early enough to change down smoothly.
Beyond the roundabout, the A18 runs north to Sandall Park and Thorne Road. This is where you get used to higher speeds and use fourth and fifth gear for longer stretches. Later still, the A630 West Moor Link gives you a busy A-road run towards junction 4 of the M18, good for holding a steady speed in a higher gear.
Armthorpe and the land around it are flat, so there are no steep hills to practise on. Your instructor will use the gentlest slopes available to teach you to hold the car on the clutch and parking brake, and to move off without rolling back. The skill matters because you could be asked to move off on an incline during your test, and you will need it whenever you drive into hillier parts of Yorkshire.

Yes. The Leger Way roundabout at the western end of Doncaster Road is a big junction with heavy traffic. Beyond it the A18 leads to the Sandall Park roundabout near the test centre. Learners from the village get regular roundabout practice as part of ordinary lessons.
Very normal. Church Street has buses and parked cars with plenty of stopping and starting, which is exactly where stalls happen. Your instructor will help you find the biting point quicker and more consistently, and you can go back to the crescents for a while if you need to.
A manual licence covers both manual and automatic cars, which gives you more choice when buying or hiring a car. Some learners prefer to skip the clutch and go automatic. Our licence guide sets out the differences, and your instructor can talk it through.
