Never driven before? That is how most of our Armthorpe learners start. The first lesson begins at your door, goes somewhere quiet in the village and covers the basics at your pace. Here is what to expect and what to get ready.
Before you sit behind the wheel you will need a provisional driving licence. You can apply for it on GOV.UK from the age of 15 years and 9 months, well ahead of your 17th birthday. Learners who get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component can begin at 16.
Theory comes later, but start reading now. The theory test is in two parts: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception clips. You will need to pass it before you can book your practical test, and it is taken at Fraser House on Netherhall Road in Doncaster. The 381 and 382 buses run from the village to Frenchgate Interchange in town.
Your instructor will drive you from home to a quiet spot. In Armthorpe that could be the newer streets around Walstow Crescent and Sargeson Road, built near where Markham Main colliery once stood, or a close off Parkway. These have little through traffic, so you can take your time.
First comes the cockpit drill: doors closed, seat adjusted, head restraint set, steering wheel position, mirrors, seatbelt. Your instructor will then explain the controls, from the indicators to the parking brake, and show you how the dual controls work on their side.
The main skill of the first lesson is moving off safely and stopping again. That means checking your mirrors and the blind spot over your right shoulder, signalling if anyone could benefit, then pulling away smoothly. Stopping well means a mirror check and a signal if needed before you bring the car to rest close to the kerb without bumping it.
You will repeat this several times. By the end of the lesson many beginners are moving off and stopping confidently, and some have tried their first gentle left turns.
Learning where Alma is based has practical advantages. Within a few minutes of most homes you have the newer streets near Doncaster Road for first drives, crescents for steering practice, a busy centre on Church Street, and faster roads beyond the Leger Way roundabout. You can progress without long drives to find the right kind of road.
Expect walkers too. Shaw Wood, the protected ancient woodland on the north-west edge of the village, has entrances off Basil Avenue and Mere Lane among others, so look out for walkers crossing near those streets. Learning to spot them early is good hazard perception practice for your theory test as well.
Over the next few lessons you will move from quiet streets to junctions in the village, then to Church Street and Mere Lane with their buses and parked cars. After that you will tackle Doncaster Road, the Leger Way roundabout and the A18. Your instructor will tell you before each new step and will not rush you.

No. You can start practical lessons straight away with a provisional licence. You must pass the theory test before booking your practical test, so most learners revise alongside their lessons. Our theory test guide has tips.
No. Your instructor will drive to a quiet street in Armthorpe and you will take over there. Busier roads like Church Street and Doncaster Road come later. You get there once moving off and stopping feel comfortable.
Everyone is different, and there is no standard number of hours for Armthorpe learners. It depends on how often you have lessons, how much you practise between them and whether you choose manual or automatic. Your instructor will give you an honest estimate once you have had a few lessons.
