Refresher driving lessons in Doncaster town centre

Holding a licence and feeling ready to drive through the middle of Doncaster are two different things. If you have not driven for a while, have moved to the city or simply dread the Interchange area, a few refresher lessons in a dual controlled car can make a big difference.

Who books refresher lessons in DN1

Refresher learners come to us for all sorts of reasons. Some passed years ago and never drove much afterwards. Some have moved into a flat in the centre from somewhere quieter. Others had a minor bump and lost their nerve, or have just bought a different type of car (perhaps an automatic or an electric model) and want to get used to it with an instructor beside them.

Whatever the reason, there is no test at the end and no judgement. You tell us what you want to feel comfortable doing, and we plan the lessons around it.

What has changed in the centre

If your memories of driving in Doncaster go back a while, the centre may look quite different now. The Frenchgate Centre was extended and joined to a new transport interchange that opened in June 2006, linking the bus station with the railway station. Trafford Way runs past the station and underneath the Frenchgate Centre.

The old North Bridge junction beside the Frenchgate Centre is now open to general traffic heading out only. Coming in that way is only for buses and taxis, along with emergency vehicles, which catches out people driving on old habits. A refresher lesson lets you learn these layouts with dual controls as a safety net.

Further out, the Great Yorkshire Way section of the A6182 opened in stages in 2016 and 2018, extending the dual carriageway south of the M18. It changed how many people reach the south-east of the borough.

Busy junctions worth revisiting

Most refresher drivers have a junction they would rather avoid. In and around the centre the usual ones are:

  • The roundabouts on the A18, including the Sidings Roundabout on Carr House Road and the Racecourse Roundabout near Belle Vue.
  • The run along Church Way past the Minster towards St George's Bridge, where traffic for Bentley and the A19 splits off.
  • The inner streets around Waterdale and Cleveland Street, with buses, pedestrians and loading vehicles.
  • Joining and leaving the A630 dual carriageway.

We will drive the ones that worry you. We take them slowly at first, then at normal times, until they feel routine again.

Motorway confidence

Doncaster is close to several motorways. The A630 meets the A1(M) at Junction 36 between Warmsworth and Balby, White Rose Way leads to Junction 3 of the M18, and the A630 heads east past Armthorpe to Junction 4. If you have avoided motorways since passing, a refresher lesson can include slip roads, joining at the right speed and lane discipline.

We cover motorway driving in more depth on our motorway lessons and Pass Plus page.

Planning your refresher lessons

A first refresher lesson usually starts with a relaxed drive so your instructor can see how you are doing. From there you agree a plan. Some drivers only need one or two sessions; others like a short block booking. Prices are on our prices page.

Read more on our main refresher driving lessons page. If you live across the river, our refresher driving lessons in Bentley page covers the roads on that side. For a full view of lessons in DN1, see driving lessons in Doncaster town centre.

Refresher driving lessons in Doncaster town centre: your questions

Can I have refresher lessons in my own car?

Our refresher lessons are in our own dual controlled cars, which are fully insured and give your instructor a way to help if needed. Once you feel confident again, you can carry on in your own car and keep practising on the routes you covered.

I passed in a manual but now drive an automatic. Is a refresher useful?

Yes. Moving to an automatic is one of the most common reasons for a refresher. Your instructor can help you get used to the creep, using the brake smoothly and the parking brake, all in central Doncaster traffic.

How many refresher lessons will I need?

There is no set number. It depends on how long you have been away from driving and what you want to be able to do. After the first lesson your instructor will give you an honest view and you can decide how many more to book.

Can a refresher lesson cover the motorway?

Yes. From the centre it is not far to the A1(M) or the M18. If motorway driving is what worries you, tell us when you book and we will plan the lesson to build up to it from dual carriageways like the A630.
